My first instinct is to watch City of God or 2046 (since I've seen those)

I've reconsidered my position on The General. Having watched most of Keaton's features, it stands out as his best film structurally. It isn't as comical as his other films so it's hard to get over the initial shock of a Keaton action adventure, but my second viewing was awesome and it was helped by a soundtrack actually made for the pictures rather than just some random stuff thrown over top. Watching silent films with generic soundtracks is like a YouTube amv. I just want to watch Goku turn super sayian. I don't want to also hear Crawling playing over it. Christ. Anyways Keaton is now on par with Chaplin for me.

Au Hasard Balthazar was neat, I guess. I'm enjoying my ponderings on the 'meaning' of the film more than I enjoyed watching it. I was more affected by Donald Richie's thoughts on the film than the actual film honestly. Bresson does have a cool approach to his movies, though. Gonna watch A Man Escaped next.

Watched Mizoguchi's The Crucified Lovers last night because he understands women better than I do. Nothing will ever be better than Ugetsu and Sansho but this was still pretty good. Miyagawa might be my favorite cinematographer. He compliments Mizoguchi's direction so well. I love his outdoor tracking shots. The film spends a lot of time indoors and it is suffocating. No room to breathe or be free in there, bros. Those outdoor scenes almost make the adultery worth it. Happy ending? You tell me.

Princess Mononoke is out since I understand too much without subtitles. (Actually, the first time I watched it, I just had a girl explain things when I was confused because the subtitles were in Chinese).

Keaton has far surpassed Chaplin for me in terms of craft and his ambition to perform some of the craziest and wittiest stunts ever captured on film. Also he manages to achieve incredible emotional impact without even showing you a smile or frown at all. So little expression, yet such strong emotion. And so goddamn funny, too. I'd also like to shout out to Harold Lloyd and especially also Charley Chase, the other heroes of slapstick comedy. You just have to watch Mum's the Word, Mighty Like a Moose and Never Weaken. The first two are Charley Chase shorts and I am stunned at the perfection and maturity with which he performs farce comedies usually associated with vulgar, base theatre acts. Never Weaken is Harold Lloyd being, well, awesome. The Crufied Lovers... idk not my favourite. Sansho and Ugetsu are earth-shattering in their brilliance, but for the next Mizoguchis I'd rather go with Street of Shame or even Princess Yang Kwei-fei (Gooch in colour is pretty ftw) than with The Crucified Lovers. I'm very interested in his earlier films, though. Only seen one silent film he made early on and then a bunch of his last films.

Wim Wenders - Wings of Desire For a variety of mostly stupid reasons I was having a pretty shitty day today and then I watched this and it spoke to every stupid thing that was bugging me and oh my god this movie is amazing.
