It's true that a filmmaker like Nolan may see himself as clever or may see himself as a visionary but I also think that' not just his doing. I think his fans, his audience, and at this the point that's how general public sees him and in a way that's how a lot of people have seen him since Memento. He set a standard for the quality and style of his films and in his audience set a standard for what to expect from his films. I'm sure a filmmaker like Nolan makes a point to do what he does because it's what he knows and because to a certain degree it's what comes naturally but I also think, like many filmmakers, he's influenced by what people expect him to do or are used to him doing. There are probably a lot of different and interesting things and ideas that he would like to try in his films and other projects but, again like many filmmakers, sometimes the pressure of living up to his own image and reputation makes the film making process complicated or difficult. And at the end of the day I'm sure one of the hardest things about being a filmmaker (or any artist for that matter) is finding that balance of making yourself happy or satisfied with what you're doing while at the same time making the people you work for, the general public, AND your audience happy or satisfied with you're doing. Few filmmakers and few artists are able to pull that off but God bless the ones that try. |

Blue Jasmine 9/10 I think Jasmine is starting to become one of my favorite Woody Allen film characters ever. Also on second viewing I believe the Streetcar Named Desire and Blanche DuBois allusions/comparisons are even more evident. |

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones 3 Stars out of 4 ![]() I went in expecting to be thoroughly unimpressed by this film, but I was pleasantly surprised. The whole supernatural motif with the love triangle centerpiece has certainly become played out since Stephenie Meyer became a gazillionaire, but what The Mortal Instruments lacks in thematic originality it more than makes up for with vivid characters, a very well-portrayed and beautiful main character, special effects that are extremely well-done, and fight scenes that are nicely choreographed and *gasp* in-focus. The whole movie is nicely-paced as well, moving along briskly from the opening scene until the conclusion of its 2-hourish running time. Bottom line: A fun, easy end-of-summer teen flick, filled with fresh special effects and a strong female protagonist holding the film together, that is substantially better 90% of the genre movies that is being accused of mimicking. |

Haven't been able to watch La Haine, Close-Up, Cache, Straw Dogs etc. because of this and I really, really want to. Maybe a way to rip them onto my computer and make them region free? I dunno. Idk if it is compatible with Windows 8 but you may try getting ahold of AnyDvd (either legally or illegally). |

The World's End 8.6/10 Got a little out there near the end but nevertheless this was the funniest movie I've seen in the theater in a very long time. |

2 Guns .... really bad, but very funny at times. okay, these two make me reconsider my objections to a threesome. |

Yes, that's one of those posts that calls for a quadruple take. |

The Tales of Hoffmann Everything about this film is vibrant. The Costume design is suburb. The sets are gorgeous. The special effects are extremely well executed. It is almost sickeningly sweet. The singing and dancing are of the highest caliber. I need to listen to this with headphones on because I had a hard time trying to follow the operatically sung dialog. |

Blue Jasmine - the usual Woody Allen side characters and schemes, but wow what a portrait. Blanchett is such a fantastic actress. |

So, I had the brilliant idea of watching Antichrist, by Lars Von Trier, to fall asleep last night. Very underwhelming. I was feeling the film for quite a while. The beginning scene was absolutely stunning, and I was huge fan of the stark monochromatic visuals. Going forth, the muted, crushed blacks were very fitting for the depiction of grief. Then it gradually descended into shit, concluding with a pointless ending. I think Von Trier wasted what could have been a very interesting psychological and ceberal work, and exchanged it for some quick extremism that literally made the movie empty and amount to very little. Maybe 4/10? |

Personally I don't like opera so it's hard for me to say I truly love this movie, but in a way I kinda do. |
