L'Atalante This film was all around a pretty meh experience for me. The Cinematography was excellent and surely was the highlight of the film. Sometimes the characters looked like they were gliding across the water or floating in the heavens. I didn't find this film as romantic as others seem to. Jean is kind of a jackass who is so consumed by jealousy that he flies off the handle frequently. I just feel bad for Juliette because she thinks she has escaped from her village life in a new an exciting world, but she has gone from one cage to another. Most of the time she is stuck in the belly of this barge while her husband has to leave her to ensure they reach their destination in a timely manner. When they do get to civilization her husband keeps her from experiencing anything because he is unable to handle any man so much as glancing at her. Père Jules was probably the best character. The Cabin boy was completely inconsequential. One scene where I could maybe see the romance was when they were in separate beds in separate places, both struggling to fall asleep without the other next to them. Overall though, meh. |

Didn't get the big deal on that one the first go around either. For me it was spending more time with French films of the 30s that led to my appreciating it more. The plot is thin but there is an aliveness and vividness to some of the camerawork that really sticks with me. You are right that Michel Simon's character is the best though. Basically as soon as you see the kitten balancing on his shoulder, the movie has won me over. Don't miss him in Renoir's La Chienne or Boudu Saved From Drowning. Rewatched Burn After Reading. I thought this was one of the most hilarious things I had ever seen when it came out, and it's still pretty funny (I think these may be my two favorite Clooney and Pitt performances) but I don't think it has enough in it to be worth more than two or three viewings to really see what it's doing. It's neither a complete trifle like the critics said it was on arrival, but it also doesn't have a complex texture of meaning to it like The Big Lebowski (or as many memorable characters or moments or, well... it's really just unfair comparing this film to that one). Worth seeing for the entertainment value if you are into the Coens' style, but this is thoroughly mid-tier stuff from them. |

Paul (2011) 8.2/10 Not as great or as clever as the Pegg/Wright films (Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End) but still quite funny. Also any hardcore sci-fi nerd (which the film makes me realize that's exactly what I am) will love the references and homages and, if any thing else, I can appreciate the film as a great love letter to science fiction and to geeks everywhere. |

i watched la pianiste (the piano teacher) and i rate it haneke/haneke. this was practically a horror film, and isabelle hupert is flawless here. also watched the man from nowhere, a 2010 korean action thriller. i dunno if its just me but koreans seem to pull off the cliched hero saves the day stuff so eloquently. enjoyable movie all around |

Two films for school. David Holzman's Diary is one of the best films about cinema, cinema-obsession--and really just the act of looking--ever, and one of the best films of the 60s, and one of the best films I've ever seen. Soooooo goooood. F for Fake raises some interesting questions about the nature of film but I did not enjoy watching it because I found all of Welles' "effects" incredibly annoying and repetitive. There is a beautiful sequence about Chartes Cathedral, though. |

Interesting rating. I'd like to hear your thoughts. I don't think I have seen anyone give it anything between a 2 and an 8. People either seem to love it or hate it. |

I didn't love or hate it and I think it's safe to say that I think it was kinda good. There were some things I liked about it but overall the things I didn't like about left me with the feeling that it was just okay. Sorry for the vague response. |

Elysium - Would have made a better video game than film/10. |
