why are you guys putting this much analysis into the all star game draft

Because it fascinates me. It's rare that we get a glimpse at how players feel about the best player hierarchy in real time. We get retired players talking about their peers years later, but almost never do we get clear signs of who players think are the best while they are in their prime. I want to know if curry would pick Giannis over Harden or is Lebron would pick Harden over Durant. Or which of those big men are the most valued. Players have a unique perspective that differs from fans and analysts.

this is a good point. i didn't think of it like this.

Pave, how do you think the draft went?

LeBron got first pick on starters, no snake.
Curry got first pick on reserves.

my guess is:

1. Durant... Harden
2. Davis... Giannis
3. Cousins... DeRozan
4. Kyrie... Embiid (although you could easily flip flop 3 and 4 for both guys)
-
5. Westbrook... Butler (i can see Curry picking both Warriors first, but i can't see LeBron leaving Butler on the board that long)
6. Wall... Klay
7. Love... Draymond
8. Beal... Towns
9. Porzingis... Lowry
10. Oladipo... Horford
11. Aldridge... Lillard
i guess? idk... all i know is that Butler/Klay/Draymond were probably Steph's first 3 bench players and that LeBron would have taken Westbrook with his. but honestly don't know how he would have picked those other guys. my guess is that Curry picked Towns 4th (or maybe higher?) and that LeBron probably didn't pick Porzingis with Towns still on the board. and my guess is Steph picked a PG with his last pick because why pick 3 PGs on purpose. he probably got to the end and realized he already had 3 Cs plus Draymond and that's why he went with a PG over Aldridge or Porzingis (whoever was left). if Oladipo was last, he would have went with a wing over another PG i think, but he probably wasn't thinking ahead that deep in the draft. so that's why i'm bettering Oladipo was not the last pick.

I think there's more than a decent chance players view Porzingis higher than Towns. Or is this more that Towns is Nike and Porzingis isn't?

Why do you think LeBron wouldn't leave Butler for a bit?

I think there's a decent chance the Clippers got the better end of the deal. I'm not convinced this makes Detroit a playoff team. Griffin is a risky player with a lot of money left on his contract. Harris has been good, even if he's not on Blake's level, but he's also necessary shooting if Detroit wants Blake-Drummond to work.

I'm not convinced they are even a good one, or a better one than before. In fact I'd bet they are worse. Blake-Drummond-Reggie with nothing else? Ouch. And they gave up pick in the process? And he's on a long contract? Goddamn.

Jermaine O'Neal, Amare Stoudemire, Shawn Kemp, Elton Brand, Chris Webber, etc I've seen this movie way too many times at this point.

I don't know if it's fair to compare him and Amare for two reasons. One, Amare made an All Star team his first year in New York. Two, Amare didn't have the passing ball-handling skills of Blake. But yeah, there's not much on Detroit. There's no spacing I can think of.

So, Harden is insane. First official 60-point triple double. (I don't have any block numbers for Wilt's 32 60-point games, so we can't even say Wilt had an unofficial one.)

How many Hall of Fame players do we have active? I count 15. Only a couple even are debatable.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Vince Carter, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Manu Ginobili, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker, Carmelo Anthony.

I don't think Joe Johnson, Kevin Love, or Marc Gasol are in. I think Draymond and Klay will be in eventually.

Clips got value for Blake, they can probably flip Tobias Harris this offseason if they want, and the pick has value. So its better they signed him and got this than not sign him at all. They might have been thinking rebuild since the CP3 trade.

One way to look at this deal from the Pistons POV is essentially trading cap space and a first round contract for a boom or bust player of the caliber Detroit probably never would have been able to sign in free agency. Having to use Blake to make space is kind of a waste of some of Blakes skills in my opinion, but with the increase handoff game that Drummond has been showcasing I think that they could theoretically get really inventive with Blake at the top of the key working with Drummond on PnR and hand offs and cuts. Depending on how point Blake works you can even theoretically replace Reggie Jackson with a guy who can handle the ball and shoot a little, which they could theoretically envision Luke Kennard doing. If people want to minimize Griffin because of his health and attitude, that's hard to argue with. But he's great to wonderful when he's healthy and engaged, and he can do more than just about anyone not named Lebron.

so LeBron's team is in chemistry hell, with questions about their coach being fired, and everyone around him playing worse than they did previously in their careers... what a shocker.

oh shocker kyrie irving is way better than thomas. i cant believe people questioned when i said this was a lopsided trade. then they got a bunch of old farts. they can't even use that brooklyn pick to get someone worthwhile. it might not even be that great a pick.

i think we underestimated Isaiah's injury, but i will go to my grave swearing that Isaiah was better than Kyrie in 2017. obvs that isn't still the case.

but my larger point was that this is like clockwork with any team that has LeBron, even when he had Kyrie. and also, Kyrie leaving in and of itself seems to be a symptom of the dysfunction and lack of structure that follows LeBron every season.

sidenote: its insane to me that people think Golden State would want to trade Klay to sign him at 34 years old when they already have 2 younger all-star forwards and amazing chemistry.

and yes, i'm firmly back on the fuck LeBron train. i don't deny his greatness, but i think we are washing away some of the known problems he's had (the fact that every star teammate he's ever had played better before or after him than they did while playing with him) while also overinflating certain things (like the consecutive finals trips, in a weak-ass conference during a span where every year 5 or 6 of the best 7 or 8 teams are in the West).
