How are you going to say he intended to get his hands?

The only rule in which I know that's anything like that is boarding where if a penalty is called and a player is bleeding as a result of the hit, it's an automatic major, but still not a match penalty.

You know another that is like that (with inference of intent) which is high sticking where blood equals 4. That's obviously not a match penalty but it is an example of how the rule book operates. Injury is used to infer intent with illegal acts. Crosby doesn't have to intend to do the damage he did or even intend to hit the hands (since slashing is illegal in the first place).

But I looked up the rule and here it is:

Rule 61 – Slashing
61.1 Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an
opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick
contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized
as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an
opponent’s body, the opponent’s stick, or on or near the opponent’s
hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play
the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.
61.2 Minor Penalty - A minor penalty, at the discretion of the Referee
based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player
who slashes an opponent.
61.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee
based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player
who slashes an opponent. When injury occurs, a major penalty must
be assessed under this rule (see 61.5).

61.4 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match
penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately
injured his opponent by slashing.
Game Misconduct Penalty – Whenever a major penalty is assessed
for slashing, a game misconduct penalty must also be imposed.

61.6 Penalty Shot – refer to Rule 57.3 – Tripping.
61.7 Awarded Goal – refer to Rule 57.4 – Tripping.
61.8 Fines and Suspensions - There are no specified fines or
suspensions for slashing, however, supplementary discipline can be
applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).

Looks like it isn't a match but a required major where a game misconduct must be imposed.

Still not buying it. It should have been a penalty, but you can't suddenly call a major because of a freak injury.

Because that's the point of the damn rule. You injure someone with an illegal play its a major and an ejection. That you don't think it should be the rule is irrelevant

But you're opening the door for any hockey play that causes an injury to become a suspension.

It's not every hockey play its only penalties. Again the rule book has had this for a long time. I think it's a fair system. If you perform an illegal act which is also a dangerous act (which slashing undoubtedly is) and cause severe harm, then the penalty should be greater.

To be clear had he served a major (or heck even a penalty) in the game I wouldn't suspend him for that (though I would for the cup check).

Canucks won 2 of their last 17 games to clinch 29th in the league and I won my hockey pool so this was our best season in the last 4 years. Only horrifying part is that our coach, GM and Linden thought this was a playoff team

The Chicago Blackhawks or the Washington Capitals will win the Stanley Cup. Chicago vs. Washington for the Stanley Cup!
