Wow, I don't think I can remember ever having this much anticipation for an album just from reading a few sentences like that. I've got it downloaded.

You should all know going in that there are two ways to listen to the album:

1. Giving it your full attention.
2. Uselessly.

It's too subtle, consisting only of undercurrents, suggestions, and hints, rather than statements, to reward anything but the closest listens.

Yeah the first time I listened to it I was sitting on my couch in total darkness at midnight, with nothing but my iPod, not knowing anything about this album except its title, not moving for 30 minutes. One of the best musical experiences ever (especially the first eight minutes; damn).

the first song is utterly devastating. had a similar experience like Drew, George had recd it, and it was absolutely breathtaking. I think all but the 4th track are absolute perfection.

it is fairly decent...

so am i to assume we're allowed to include jazz, classical, and other albums also? i don't think i've ever done anything like this, but i think i might enjoy putting a list together, even if it likely ends up lacking somehow...

yeah man, any genre, would love to see you do a list.

I linked dreww's rec on the first page to his original post so if there is heavy traffic here you can always refer back to the front. I'll do that for any album a poster wishes to highlight

Question about classical music:

For classical music, should I...

(a) List only classical recordings released in the 1970s (probably won't bother with this because it seems too arbitrary to me)
(b) List only classical pieces composed/premiered in the 1970s (i.e. the date that you get if you visit a composition's wiki page)
(c) List only classical CDs which unambiguously meet both criteria, e.g. Philip Glass' North Star

?

Well shit. That was quite an experience. To all those who haven't heard it yet, believe the hype.

Oh and I agree with Yousha about the fourth track being slightly lesser than the other four.

I think most definitely b and c. The list shold consist of music of the 70s.

Anyways, I would like to recommend an album that will place highly on my list:

Anthony Braxton - Dortmund (1976) Quartet

I can't talk about music like Dreww can so I'll just quote AMG:

AMG bio wrote:
Genius is a rare commodity in any art form, but at the end of the 20th century it seemed all but non-existent in jazz, a music that had ceased looking ahead and begun swallowing its tail. If it seemed like the music had run out of ideas, it might be because Anthony Braxton covered just about every conceivable area of creativity during the course of his extraordinary career. The multi-reedist/composer might very well be jazz's last bona fide genius.

AMG album review wrote:
Braxton has produced many excellent recordings through the years, but only a small number stand out from the pack the way this one does. This version of his pianoless quartet is captured live in an inspired, energized performance at the first Dortmund Jazz Festival in Germany. Trombonist George Lewis had only recently joined the group, replacing the more introspective trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. Braxton's compositions are uniformly brilliant, incorporating marching band themes, lightening-fast hard bop-influenced runs, and strings of non-syncopated eighth notes, all of which contribute to a sense of wonder and excitement. Also, Braxton is in marvelous form on his varied horns, springing forth an arsenal of seemingly endless ideas.

As a bonus, here also is his 1971 solo saxophone album For Alto, the first of its kind and still possibly the best:

One thing that's not clear from the first post: are these lists supposed to be ranked or unranked?
