Call me crazy but I see the red on Facelift.

That's because I just redded it without any knowledge of Negative Creep's post, i'm doing a bit of cleanup on the tiers right now.

reviews seem good overall, but many of the "excellent" reviews are from Metal or Hard Rock magazines who give tens out indiscriminately. From music publications that cover all kinds of music (Spin, Rolling Stone, Allmusic), reviews seem favorable/above average. I suppose its worth a bold.

I always thought Facelift and Dirt were equally revered, and pretty much considered their two crowning achievements, album-wise.

I could see Face as orange, but I wont push my luck. Even though there really isnt one weak song on the whole thing.

though im in agreement , nah thats not true ... facelift just hit top 50 , went double platinum, had no top 10 hits .... dirt hit top 10 , about 3 or 4 top 10 hits, quad platinu, not to mention FAR more acclaimed from all over than Face ..... think the tiers perfect ... JoF is more acclaimed and revered than face actually .....but they're both a notch below Dirt ...

I'm so sick of "chart success" being the main factor in these things. Facelift is loved by AiC diehards as much as Dirt is.

Although I like Facelift more than Dirt, Dirt should be ranked higher than Facelift simply because Facelift wasn't nearly as adventurous or mature as Dirt. I love Facelift and all, but it really is nothing more than an awesome, but kind of generic, hard rock album.

As for Jar of Flies, I think that should be in the same league as Dirt because it is even more mature than Dirt and just as adventurous. It really is their best release, despite the fact that it doesn't get talked about as much as Dirt.

How do you define "mature" then?
As far as the lyrics go, both albums are on par with each other, imo.

Well, most of the lyrics in Facelift are ambiguous (line by line), leading me to believe that they weren't that well thought out. A lot of the themes are the same in Dirt, but they just don't connect with the listener on Facelift in the same way that they do in Dirt, imo. But really, most of the lyrics on both of these albums are pretty weak (there are some notable exceptions, though).

I feel that Dirt is more mature and it may at least partially be due to the changes in dynamic that occur in Dirt, where every track doesn't sound like they're just trying to make you head bang like in Facelift. Not saying that wanting to do some headbanging makes you stupid, but on Dirt they showed that they don't just have a one-track mind when it comes to what they want to portray in their music. I think they take this even further in Jar of Flies.

Maybe these points aren't that great, but AiC are much more adventurous on Dirt than on Facelift due to changes in dynamic they hadn't tried previously.

Jar of flies is their most mature album musically...id agree...

also , could we add Cantrell's solo career and Mad Seasons album here too ?? if none of you have checked out Cantrells solo work , highly recommended ... its very very good...

and im sure all of you have heard above....its a brilliant album ...
