the Brewers fan in me is telling me to disagree but it's hard to make an argument for Randy Wolf, he's such a volatile pitcher. The Giants though have Madison Bumgarner, he's a very good #4, I think i'd rather have him than Worley.

Bumgarner is really our #3 (and the 2nd best in MLB after Hamels). But our #4 Vogelsong has been better than either Oswalt or Worley. Doesn't matter though since we've decided to skip the playoffs this year.

Contending teams' (and Giants') playoff rotations ranked by combined WAR (average of fangraphs and b-ref):

Philadelphia Phillies 21.5
Roy Halladay 7.7
Cliff Lee 6.2
Cole Hamels 5.1
Vance Worley 2.5
(Roy Oswalt 1.5)

San Francisco Giants 15.9
Matt Cain 4.7
Tim Lincecum 4.5
Madison Bumgarner 3.8
Ryan Vogelsong 2.9

Detroit Tigers 15.5
Justin Verlander 7.3
Doug Fister 4.7
Max Scherzer 2.3
Rick Porcello 1.2

Los Angeles "The Angels" Angels of Anaheim, California 14.7
Jered Weaver 6.0
Dan Haren 5.2
Ervin Santana 3.3
Tyler Chatwood 0.2
(Joel Pineiro -0.5)

New York Yankees 14.5
CC Sabathia 6.7
Bartolo Colon 2.8
Freddy Garcia 2.5
Ivan Nova 2.5

Texas Rangers 14.2
CJ Wilson 5.0
Matt Harrison 3.3
Alexi Ogando 3.0
Derek Holland 2.9
(Colby Lewis 1.9)

Tampa Bay Rays 13.5
James Shields 5.2
David Price 4.5
Jeremy Hellickson 2.5
Jeff Niemann 1.3

Arizona Diamondbacks 11.5
Ian Kennedy 4.5
Daniel Hudson 3.6
Josh Collmenter 2.2
Joe Saunders 1.2

Boston Red Sox 9.2-13.0 depending on injuries
Josh Beckett 5.1
Jon Lester 4.3
(Erik Bedard 2.1)
(Clay Buchholz 1.5)
John Lackey 0.0
Tim Wakefield -0.2

St. Louis Cardinals 10.6
Chris Carpenter 3.3
Edwin Jackson 3.3
Jaime Garcia 2.0
Kyle Lohse 2.0

Milwaukee Brewers 10.0
Shawn Marcum 3.0
Zack Greinke 2.5
Yovani Gallardo 2.3
Randy Wolf 2.2

Atlanta Braves 8.0-9.7 depending on injuries
Tim Hudson 3.0
(Jair Jurrjens 2.6)
Brandon Beachy 2.3
(Tommy Hanson 1.8)
Derek Lowe 1.5
Mike Minor 1.2

Giants aren't going to be in the playoffs though. I was limiting it to NL playoff teams.

fWAR derives from FIP and xFIP, and Lackey's isn't so awful thanks to his roughly 2:1 K/BB ratio. They gave him a 1.1 mark. bWAR has him at -1.0.

Honestly if making the playoffs means TLR is back for another year then I'd prefer the Cardinals not qualify for them. Playing the Phillies in the first round isn't enticing, anyway.

the phillies, much like the lenape tribe, pray to each team/animal after the hunt, thank it for its participation, use every part of the animal in the weeks to come. believe it or not, it's as much an honor for them to slaughter your team as it is for your team to sacrifice themselves to almighty philadelphia

I guess everyone gets runs in Colorado cuz of the physics of the ballpark, but damn, why couldn't the Giants be hitting like this a month ago? Gahhh. Well it don't matter because they're in the midst of a huge comeback and we will definitely be in the playoffs.

Playoff odds (at espn.com) are 5.5%

I'm buying my tickets for Tuesday night at the Latrine as we speak
