Also, I'm thinking Scorpions for top 30.

Anyone agree?

Let's try to get #'s 21-25 right first.

And I probably disagree.

21. Rush
22. King Crimson
23. The Kinks
24. Boston
25. Bad Company

... have to tell you I can`t recall ever calling Bad Company or Boston hard rock .... regardless of designation, Grand Funk would be a far far superior choice ... and GFR had truly hard rock albums in their early days starting in 1969, not just the odd tune hear and there on an album once in awhile .... Take care

Van Halen, on the other hand, were phenomenally huge with Roth, and that prime period was about seven years, nearly twice as long as Purple's Mark II personnel.

And Van Halen became even bigger with Hagar.

And nowhere near as influential or acclaimed as the Roth years.

I mean seriously, who the fuck was influenced by candy-ass radio songs like "Why Cant This Be Love"?
IMO, that's not Van Halen.

Well, Mr. Big seems to have based its sound on that stuff! "Just Take My Heart" sounds like a 5150 outtake, for example.

But, sure, VH under Hagar was not nearly as acclaimed or influential as they were in the Roth years. They were very successful, though.

You seem to have a pretty liberal definition of hard rock. I agree with "Minstrel in the Gallery", "Teacher" and "Cross-Eyed Mary" being hard rock tunes. I don't think they're necessarily among Tull's greatest songs.

They're all on their various "best of" collections. "Hymn 43" and "Locomotive Breath" aren't hard rock? "Aqualung" has its gentle passages, but its hallmark riff is heavy as fuck and it features a killer guitar solo.

Well you said it yourself there - "significantly less acclaimed and influential".

.. actually what I did say was ... "the collective sum of all DPs parts through each iteration has collectively a greater influence than the sum totals of VH as a direct comparison" ... I did not say each of the parts or iterations were equal to each other ... I was stating when adding them all together etc etc ... on another note VH is #461 in the album charts for the UK and 67 for the US ...... Take care

No no, that post was in response to paul, not you.

Sorry about that, but having said that ... what do you think about the following .... Take care

Guitar - Ritchie Blackmore + Tommy Bolin + Steve Morse ....or Eddie Van Halen

Vocals - Rod Evans + Ian Gillan + Glen Hughes + Joe Lynn Turner ....or David Lee Roth + Sammy Hagar+ Gary Cherone

Bass - Nick Simper+ Roger Glover + Glen Hughes or ....Michael Anthony + Mark Stone + Wolfgang Van Halen

Drums - Ian Paice or .... Alex Van Halen

Keyboards - Jon Lord + Don Airey or ..... EVH, I suppose

Perhaps we could say that about Bad Company but I would keep Boston in there. GFR is a great choice but not top 30 material.

So, "You Really Got Me" or "My Generation" are not hard rock then? "Break On Through (To the Other Side)"? "Purple Haze"?

I am talking about hard rock as a fully defined genre separate from rock & roll or rock.

The issue might be it wasn`t defined as hard rock for the purposes on this list .... Take care

But they included Tommy for 1969 and Who's Next for 1971. Quadrophenia is harder rock than both.

Judas Priest is greater than Soundgarden, Lizzy, and Motorhead.

I'm not sure if Priest and Motorhead deserve such high placements, though they are definitely top 30-40 probably.

Gminer,
I have definitely not forgotten Grand Funk, but I cant see any real detectable influence or significant acclaim. I mean, they are huge, a lot of bands know them and praise them, but not to the same degree as many others that probably belong there first.
Ditto for UFO, not much overall acclaim because they never really made it as big as many of their contemporaries.
I think I agree on Heart though. They do pretty well in popularity and acclaim, even if not much in influence.

Herbs,
I thought about King Crimson, but overall their hard rock output is minimal at best. Schizoid Man is a great choice, but they only have a small handful of songs that could truly be 'hard rock'.

As a matter of fact I did have them low:
21. Rush
22. Judas Priest
23. Soundgarden
24. Thin Lizzy
25. Motorhead

I don't believe Thin Lizzy deserves to be in this bracket; that's much too high for a band that only does moderately well by the criteria.

The rest of these artists, however, are at least worth considering -- particularly Judas Priest.

I haven`t forgotten them either and have started listening again to their early material .... and it just strikes what an absolutely wonderful band ... and such a great catalogue of exceptional tunes

for example ... from 1969 GFR and the tune Paranoid
