This is a good shout. Just consistently awesome club rap beats with the endlessly charismatic Meth and Red rhyming in unison on top of them.

i would place a bet that Kanye would have a couple albums that end up above Illmatic, but he'll probably split votes. Madvillainy and Chambers are gonna take top 2 at the end of this, imo.

I doubt it, I think The Low End Theory will but up there also.

yeah, as long as rym categorizes in some way as hip hop or a subgenre of it it's cool. I feel like most of you will think in terms of what's the best album within the genre rather than feeling that something that just has traces of hip hop is the best album overall. I think you should think in terms of genre first before, meaning closer to what you hear sounds like hip hop (as pave says). Genre already means categories and trying to extend out too far seems more of an argument to what's considered hip hop than conjuring a list of pre-established signifying traits that we know. Give yourself tighter and more focused limits and you can dig deeper and deeper rather than being overwhelmed by elusive definitions of the genre.

looked at all the rap stuff i have in my itunes and i've changed my mind bros, i'm mos def down for a rap list, though i have a few queries:
1.) are we counting actual rap albums and mixtapes as separate? should we make different lists for each?
2.) are we doing songs lists as well? coz i'm actually down to do a songs list this time around
3.) are we doing a 2012 PT list? the november due date seems to clash a bit with this as some might have to cram in order to make both
otherwise LET'S DO THIS SHIT

1. same. I always felt mixtapes were practically albums
2. yeah, but it's optional. I love song lists to death so I'll be doing one.
3. We are, which is why the due date will be around november. We've been working on 2012 lists throughout the year so a month or so should give you ample enough time to concoct a list.

edit: i'm just going to keep adding albums as i revisit old ones and see how long it gets. that top 50 was a lot easier than i thought it would be (which i thought would be fairly easy).

Much love for your #1.

I've been meaning to get around to listening to more hip hop anyway, so this won't be too hard.

Right now, the only albums that'll definitely be in my Top 10 are "Paid in Full", "It Takes a Nation of Millions" and maybe "Ten" by cLOUDDEAD. "Boy in da Corner" , "Low End Theory" and "Never Better" will probably be in the Top 50.

Don't know what to do with WHY? albums given the high amount of non-rap songs on their albums.
