Really enjoyed that clip gminer. Very talented player. I wouldn't be surprised if John Frusciante got mad influence from this guy.

That could be, we know Jeff Beck was influenced by Bolin to pursue instrumental guitar after hearing Bolin on Billy Cobham`s deeply influenctial jazz fusion masterpiece Spectrum ..... Take care

... this might give you a smile Bolin live with the James Gang ...

For Bolin, I would highly recommend Whips and Roses ... it is in my mind the absolutely best guitar album I have purchased in the past 10 years ... you will not be disappointed ... and in my opinion Bolin is the second greatest American rock guitarist after Hendrix ... Take care

check out a few of these from Whips and Roses ..

... and here is part of a review written on this CD ..

Every track is worthy of many listens. There is so much to hear on this CD. The guitar is typically beyond reproach, the instrumentals are incredible showcases of jazz-blues-rock fusion that proves unequivocally and repeatedly that BolIn could play anything with expertise and flair like few have that come before and after his demise. “Flyin’ Fingers” and “Blowin' Your Cookies” are just too much, this dude was a six-string magician, a true icon of his day. The more I listen to the tracks it just amazes me that he has not received more attention over the years.

Bolin’s story is not unlike another great guitar player named Hendrix, although his legacy does not mirror the great one’s musically based on the recordings he left behind, his life certainly parallels Hendrix in some ways and you have to wonder how far he would have taken it if he were to be alive today. Would he be compared to or even surpass Jimi? Although we will never know, I have no doubt that Tommy Bolin would have evolved into something beyond anything a mere mortal could fathom. He was right up there with the best, and surely is with Hendrix and all the rest of the great rock ‘n’ roll tragedies. As sad as that may be, the music can still bring us plenty of joy. If you are a guitar aficionado, you will rejoice when you hear this irreplaceable material.

Ok, wow, well I guess I'll take your guys' word for it. I've watched a small handful of Purple and Rainbow gigs (probably 4 or 5) and most of what I have seen is mostly him standing in one spot and occasionally making some hand gesture. I don't mean that to be derisive of him; like I said, I think his playing is consistently fantastic. I just have never seen him being especially an especially entertaining visual performer.

Just the first YouTube video I clicked on when I typed in "Deep Purple Live" basically exactly what I always expect to see from Blackmore:

Please indulge me my friend ... and give this one a full listen / look .... Take care

Watched this a while ago and forgot to respond. Please don't take this reply as me trying to be flippant or contrarian, because I'm not at all; I'm just being honest. I really don't connect with Blackmore's stage presence at all. Some of the posing and stuff in your video, gminer, was kind of cool. But he always appears disconnected from the audience and very introspective in his demeanor. Let me say again that he is one of my favorite guitar players ever... Stargazer, Child in Time, Light in the Black, and Sixteenth Century Greensleeves all being among my favorite rock songs and those first three among my favorite solos; but I stand by my original statement that there are hundreds of famous guitar players with better stage presence.

I reckon it's our definitions of stage presence that differ.

cruz,

All those points are fair, as it is hard to explain if you haven`t seen Blackmore perform live ..... I have seen him in Purple and Blackmore`s Night, unfortunately never caught a Rainbow performance ... Take care

Blackmore def made a spectacle of himself, and in a very original way...but I totally see where Cruz is coming from in saying he's detached from the audience and often the band. To me a guy with killer stage presence(even though he isn't a guitarist) is Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. He's always connecting with the audience...shouting the lyrics with his foot on the monitor..little things like that that make the player easier to identify with. He also interacted with the band a lot whereas Ritchie was often in his own little world...
with that said I obviously dig Ritchie's stage presence too. Just isn't everyone's trip I guess.

WOW...I'm truly blown away. Been a long time since I've heard a really different sounding strat player. I can tell from the 10 tracks or so I've heard that Tommy was a true giant. Can't beleive I didn't get into him ages ago.

And even though this isn't a vocalists thread, what's some good Graham Bonnet and Ian Gillan material to get into? Just name an album or two and I will check em!

I think I agree with all of you. Gminer, that's true, that stage presence often cannot possibly translate through a video. I've seen many performers who I thought were nothing special until I saw them in person and then really connected to their stage presence once I saw them in person. The inverse is also true, unfortunately, but that has been significantly more rare.

Yngtchie, the way I think of stage presence is how much a performer connects with his audience and, more importantly, to what extent I feel connected to them. There is always going to be a degree of subjectivity to that. And even on the "objective" side of stage presence, like how crazy one's antics are on stage, do not always translate. For instance, my friends and I saw a Hendrix cover artist a few months ago, and he was really spectacular. Played the solos note for note, played behind his back, jumped into the audience, played with his teeth, etc. But all of us agreed, afterward, that we really hated every minute of watching him perform. He is pretty popular in our area, so obviously there are many who disagree.

Domino, yeah I think Steve Harris is a great example of a performer who draws people in and really engages the audience. Bruce Dickinson is the same way. I remember when I saw Dio in 2007 or so, when he first came on stage I was so awestruck, I didn't move a muscle for like 10 minutes.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, to each his own. If you guys all see/feel something in Blackmore that I do not, then I totally respect that.

His tone is probably the best I've heard come out of a strat. And I certainly dig his vocals more than Hendrix. The guy had a flare for songwriting too, which is most surprising.

Dio is an animal in stage presence imo. A very compelling frontman.

And yes, when I saw Maiden live this last summer I was totally awe struck at the stage presence of Bruce and all the other guys. They get the audience so fired up it's just astonishing. I feel like Brian May is really easy to connect with as well, wish I'd seen Queen.
