Yeah I never understand that criticism. In what sense is The Big Lebowski not as well made? The editing? The lighting?

The pacing.

yeah pacing is a big one and the setting in general. It just seems more of a well conceived story in general where everything feels pretty at one and of its own little world. I like Big Lebowski but it's no contest for old men, Fargo is definitely a better film.

Big Lebowski is all about the time and place, imo. They set the film up as a lost indie film from the early '90s and it succeeds as that. The time frame is explicitly referenced (with the constant Saddam remarks), but it doesn't try to dwell on it. I think some of the odd things about the film can be partly explained by that.

I'm not sure if Slutty Princess Diaries is eligible for this list.

great list brien. Makes me want to watch my 12 Angry Men blu crit I have on my shelf unwatched. Shit has so much extras.

I too have lacked on animation in my film viewing life. Not sure what would make mine, probably a Miyazaki or the most recent The Illusionist.

I'd rather take it to the Ozu thread, but why Early Summer > Late Spring? Late Spring mo bettah, as they say.

I think Early Summer has richer character dynamics, is funnier, has more of the lightness of spirit that I love in Ozu.

yeah I think Early Summer is his most ambitious and perfect film, Late Spring is really close tho.
