So having idiosyncratic lyrics = going nowhere.

Ok man, just make that indie folk album you always wanted to make about jerking off to pics of girls in your high school yearbook before crying yourself to sleep so we can hear what true songwriting is.

No, I actually specifically explained why I felt that particular song went nowhere. Astral Weeks has idiosyncratic lyrics and I obviously love that album.

I guess this is just the part we disagree on. I think it works very well, the observer in the lyricism and the moving songwriter in the music. Bowie is a contradiction and a chameleon and that's his direction.

some more:

Tom Waits' music is better than The Beatles. no

Ani DiFranco is a better lyricist than Bob Dylan. no opinion

Bob Dylan is a better songwriter and performer than he is a lyricist. possibly

Illmatic isn't that good. and neither is Nas as a whole. the following emcees/lyricsts are all more fun to listen to: Mos Def, Redman, Big L, Eminem, Common, Talib Kweli, Big Pun. no opinion

80s Crimson > 70s Crimson false

Chris Cornell was a terrible songwriter. his vocal melodies are the equivalent of snails moving through mud with anvils strapped to their backs (with no shoes, nigga) with you completely

Pet Sounds is really good for like a year after you get over the fact that, as a teenager, you thought The Beach Boys sucked (despite not knowing anything about them) but then you realized they didn't. but after that year, it really isn't all that fun to listen to anymore. false

Tom Waits is far more creative than The Beatles could ever hope to be.

Yeah Tudwell basically named all the reasons why I love David Bowie.

agree with your thoughts on "passionate" music boo boo. I'm not sure if this is basically the same thing, but I also don't like describing music as "emotional." Doesn't all music come from some type of emotion? Even if the emotion is apathy, or emptiness.

Punk rock is single handedly the worst thing to ever happen to music and had it never existed music would without question be significantly better today as a result.

The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, The Cure and Johnny Thunders were all fucking terrible.

UK stopped producing anything of merit after 1976... unless it was a prog band.

So do The Ramones suck twice as much?
