His technique there wasn't bad(though people say there are plenty of bad videos of him) but the phrasing just goes nowhere. It almost sounds like something a beginning guitarist would write played by someone with experience(his vibrato and intonation are very good and he picks pretty clean here). lol I think calling him a bad guitarist is a bit harsh. "Lame" fits better.

You may wanna try this... Weather Report, "Birdland"...just a really cool jazz tune. the guitar isn't the standout instrument but I think you'll dig this

If you like jazz fusion check out Jeff Beck's album Blow by Blow. Really emotive playing. Gary Moore has some fusion stuff too but it's pretty busy and I know you prefer sparser solos.
