29. Beach House - Silver Soul vs. Austin Peralta - Capricornus

Kinda glad that this is the Beach House song nominated, cause there are a few BH tracks I would have voted for over "Capricornus". "Silver Soul" wouldn't even be in the top half of the album it's on if I was ranking songs -- it just doesn't resonate with me at all. Beach House usually do repetition well (I would listen to Legrand say "gila" over and over for an hour straight), but this song is just very flat. "Capricornus", on the other hand, is absolutely dynamic. It's a galloping and boisterous ride bound together by Peralta's piano. I really like the whole album, and would have loved to see what he was capable of in the future (Peralta died in November, only 22 y.o.).

30. Charles Mingus - Myself When I Am Real vs. Can – Paperhouse

I found it hard to engage with the Mingus track. I liked specific bits of it, but itt was a little too meandering for me to appreciate through one listen. "Paperhouse" is very compelling and much more in line with where my tastes are currently. Great, great track.

Feeling all jazzy this morning so I'm going that for both. "Capricornus" is a highlight of the tourney. Not my favorite BH song but it does have one of their sickest outros.

I was about to say that only few bands could beat a jazz track and Can would be one of them, but I'm lovin' the vibes on the Mingus track. It's a good chill contrast to the mighty Capricornus.

"Silver Soul" is the song that made me a Beach House fan, even though "Capricornus" is mighty.

Charles Mingus - Myself When I Am Real vs. Can – Paperhouse
Charles Mingus is what made me explore more jazz while Can made me not want to explore more krautrock. Pretty. easy.

The Beach House song disappointed me because Kendrick Lamar never came busting through with a verse like I hoped he was going to. No, I don't care if that's not a legitimate criticism (actually the track really just didn't do too much for me). Capricornus was kind of interesting. That, I guess.
