I love this song. I mean, srsly, Wetton could bend any fucking lyric to his will - doesn't matter how strange or cryptic (or in this case, silly bordering on lame) the lyrics are, Wetton can fucking sing it into magic: "I AM THE DRI-VERRR / OF AN UN-DER-GROUND TRAAAAIN."

Oh yeah, goes without saying this just amazing music, my little bit of reading and research on the track suggests this one came about in the same fashion as "Starless" in that it was really fine-tuned and fleshed out during live-performance tinkering. That gorgeous sharp tone that Fripp and Cross lock into...

In retrospect King Crimson were a really shitty band until ConstruKtion of Light, it helped that they finally had a competent drummer for a change.

Mastelotto and Harrison are the only good Crimson drummers.

I love how some websites have listed that song as having some of the worst lyrics of all time and call it misogynist.

Yeah I'm sure King Crimson weren't being in any way ironic with that song and they were really boasting about all the ass they get.

This band just utterly fascinates me to no end.

Is it possible that Red is the most perfect album in rock history?
I never used to care much for the first half of "Providence" but now I'm starting to appreciate it more.

"Cadence And Cascade" is still my favorite though.

Also, are Lizard, Earthbound, and Islands any good?

The first half of Providence has some really remarkable moments. Cross' violin is obviously great, but the way the rest of the band take on the roll of ambience/atmospherics and their responses to Cross' violin are the stuff lightning-in-a-bottle live improvisations are made of (of course, King Crimson were bottling lightning bolts on the reg and tossing them into album releases), but Providence is probably their best out of all of their live/improvised sets.

Yeah, I've found that often you have to listen to things like that with the right frame of mind. Being in a relaxed state always enhances it more.

Idk, overall I prefer "Trio" as far as the improvised stuff goes (it's so much darker). But one thing is for sure - the next album I'm purchasing will be a KC album.

EDIT - Er, nevermind, for some reason I was remembering Trio as being "dark", but I just listened to it again and it's actually quite the opposite - ethereal and serene.

Gotta love that funk rhythm section of Bruford/Wetton on "We'll Let You Know"...

One more thing - why does no one ever mention "Fallen Angel"? It's probably my favorite song on Red, in all honesty.

I love Fallen Angel, but then again I love all the songs on Red, it being one of my favorite albums. But nothing on the album compares to Starless man, as cliche of a pick it may be, that shit is transcendental. I like Fallen Angel for its more 'simplistic' structure (using simplistic really lightly here) as it is the song on the album that seems to flow the most like a traditional rock song would. I think its a nice variation in the album that holds it from becoming a complete wankfest.

There's quite a few concert recordings up on youtube in their entirety, and I've been blown away by a couple of their '73-'74 concerts.

These guys are THE GREATEST. I adore Yes, Rush, and tons of other prog bands, but it's clear that KC had something that just...can't be duplicated. Cadence And Cascade...*haunting*
