Bit of a stretch to call Giant Steps "weak".

I agree with George. It is weak by his own lofty standards.

Maybe so, but in absolute terms it's still excellent. A perfect way to kick off arguably his most consistently brilliant album.

Well I'd give the song an 8 so it isn't like I'm saying it sucks.

Pink Floyd-High Hopes
vs
Elvis Costello - I Don't Wanna Go to Chelsea

I Don't Wanna Go to Chelsea is great but High Hopes is one of the best new listens for me in the tournament.

Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay
vs
Eric B. & Rakim - I Ain't No Joke

One of Zappa's best.

Pulp - Common People http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqgXzPfAxjo
vs
Annie - Heartbeat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CObvp32Q4Eo

Miles Davis - Right Off part 1

I'm not a big fan of A Tribute to Jack Johnson. Melissa takes this.

The Cramps - Bikini Girls With Machine Guns
vs
L.Shankar - Darlene

The Go! Team - Everyone's a VIP to Someone
vs
Lil Wayne - A Milli

Pink Floyd - High Hopes vs. Elvis Costello - I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea
The High Hopes video didn't work so I hope the version I heard was correct. Whatever it was, it was cheesy, overwrought, and overdecorated. Meanwhile the guitar riff and overall paranoid bite of I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea is perfect: no more than needed.

Pulp - Common People vs. Annie - Heartbeat
I like to listen to Common People when I'm mad at a particular person in my life, but Heartbeat is just the better song.

Miles Davis - Right Off vs The Allman Brothers Band - Melissa
I think Right Off is good and everything but Melissa is pure musical splendor.

The Go! Team - Everyone's a VIP to Someone vs. Lil Wayne - A Milli
Blowout.

Definitely Costello. There's so much energy in this song, in all the instruments and in Costello's angry voice and lyrics. The Floyd song is just boring in comparison. And I'm not entirely sure why, but the vocals just really turn me off.

Frank Zappa - Watermelon in Easter Hay
vs
Eric B. & Rakim - I Ain't No Joke

The Zappa song was a bit too self-consciously "epic" with its length and spacey sound and stuff. I Ain't No Joke has some great lyrics.

Pulp - Common People
vs
Annie - Heartbeat

Common People is a good pop song but Heartbeat is a great one.

The Go! Team - Everyone's a VIP to Someone
vs
Lil Wayne - A Milli

This was my first listen to A Milli in quite some time. I used to like the song quite a bit with its minimal beat and the way Lil Wayne flows over it, but this time I guess I paid a little more attention to the lyrics and it was pretty bad. There are so many awkward pauses and transitions that just don't flow at all. This is from a purely sonic point of view - obviously the lyrics are stream-of-consciousness and so don't flow together on any logical level. Which itself is a flaw in the song, since Wayne manages to say even less here than the average shitty mainstream rap song. There goes the one Lil Wayne song I used to like. The other song is good, but not one of my favorites from that album.

Wow, the fact that a song as shitty as A Milli, A Milli, Amilli made it this far is stunning. I'll take the indie song with the harmonica and banjo I don't really like.
