i feel like trance as a genre had so much potential but her auteurs rarely ever pushed their songwriting to transcendence. as a result the genre feels cluttered and plagued by cliches, but man there are a handful of trance tracks that are legitimately fucking good.

early 90's trance is worth checking out - before trance became a scare word for electronic music fans

It's definitely true that there's an abundance of cliches in modern trance, but it's enjoyable as fuck if you find a good mix and are in the right mood. Still, so many songs from trance artists sound like they just follow the exact same formula. Here's one modern trance album that I think is actually consistently awesome all the way through:

Trance at its best is so fucking good.

Speaking more generally, I wish there were more ambitious music being created today that was both epic and tasteful.

deepchord presents echospace - liumin (in my opinion the best album of the '10's so far). make sure you get the 2cd version with 'liumin reduced' as the second disk. headphones essential.

you said epic and tasteful earlier up there, try this if you haven't. one of my favourite tracks of all time.

What's some electronic music that's intellectually stimulating in a way similar to Autechre's Confield. It doesn't need to sound like Confield, necessarily.

I'm not sure how to explain it differently than what I said. I want abstractly intellectual electronic music.

It's not nearly as complex as Confield, but I find Not for Threes by Plaid to be intellectually stimulating.
