Stan Freberg, who made some of the funniest records of the 50s, has passed at age 88.

Ben E. King 9/28/38 - 4/30/15
Lead singer for The Drifters from 1959-1960 (on such classics as "There Goes My Baby", which he wrote, "Save The Last Dance For Me", "I Count The Tears" and "This Magic Moment"). Went solo thereafter with immortal songs such as "Stand By Me", which he also wrote, "Spanish Harlem" and "Supernatural Thing". This song, "Young Boy Blues", came from the same session as "Stand By Me" and "Spanish Harlem". Not as big, but nearly as good.

Very sad. King is probably thought of by a lot of people as a two-hit wonder (especially if they don't realize that he was also the lead singer of the Drifters during a key period), but he really had a long and rich career. I enjoy a lot of his material and I feel lucky that I was able to catch him in person on an oldies bill many years ago.

Adding that I listened to the two of King's albums I had on my hard drive over the last two days. Sings For Soulful Lovers is mostly covers with kind of by-the-numbers arrangements, but damn he sings them well. Rough Edges (which I used to have on vinyl, but I hadn't heard it in at least 15 years--I'm way way behind on listening to my downloads) is also mostly covers, but with much more interesting arrangement including a few medleys. Really good stuff as King was trying to change with the times.

Rest in Peace, B.B. King. Thank you for everything.

And to think, just as I started that rolling stone list, I found myself really enraptured by Live in Cook County Jail. RIP. Just when the blues light turns on for me, one of the greats dies.

side slightly racist note: I'm surprised he lived that long since he was a heavy black man, not a good combo for longevity.

Well that sucks, his bass playing on Off The Wall and Thriller is incredible.

Ornette Coleman passed this morning. Granddaddy of the squeaking and squawking.
