I remember back in the day on DDD where Pearl Jam was pretty popular (but not as popular as Tool). There would be lots of Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana arguments. I'm kind of sad I participated in those because it's like picking between your children. I love both of them.

yeah i remember speaking a lot of shit about Nirvana initially when i was about 15 or 16 , and saying how Chains and SG were so much better than them and PJ ....they're all awesome...though I'll always have Chains at 1 among the 4 .....

edit: i'm ashamed i spent like four years pretending i was too good to listen to them. those years between 17-21 in age should be taken with caution. too much stock put into critics, too much time wasted trying to appear smarter or more cultured (im sure Dreww is gonna accuse me of trying to be the anti-elitist here, but thats not my intention). not enough time simply loving art and life and entertainment and letting instincts take over. at least that was my experience. and Pearl Jam was a tragedy of that mindset. sad times.

I kinda did that my senior year of high school (with Nirvana too). All of my friends either hated Pearl Jam, or didn't mind them but never wanted to listen to them, plus I was getting into rap and I got sidetracked. Then I went to Bonnaroo that summer and saw them live for the second time, and was like "Why the fuck did I forget about them?"

But yeah PJ definitely has that arena rock stigma, which isn't cool anymore, even if it hasn't really been an accurate label since the early '90s (faded after Ten, evaporated with No Code). Still though, pretty much everyone, including the most avid PJ haters I know, love the Into The Wild soundtrack.

I don't know if you guys heard about this but Cameron Crowe is directing a documentary about Pearl Jam and it's going to going to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the band or at least the 20th anniversary of Ten coming out. Says Jeff Ament "Our manager Kelly has had the idea to do a 20 year anniversary retrospective movie so he's been on board with Cameron Crowe for the last few years." Mike McCready also said, "“We are just in the very early stages of that…starting to go through all the footage we have, and Cameron’s writing the treatment." The film is scheduled to come out this year and the title for now is Pearl Jam Twenty, and will have an accompanying book and soundtrack. It sounds like this is going to be awesome.

I played Silver Rocket by Sonic Youth today on my show and I realized that the song (the riff anyway) sounds a lot like Spin The Black Circle.
