I'm quite surprised to see Jackie Wilson as low as #15.

Well, these last few weeks I have heard many songs of singers/groups that Sampson cited, also the Bruce's videos. Later I'll post the singers that I feel are the best according to the technical criteria.

Jackie Wilson is more known for his solo career rather than for being lead singer in vocal group so I am not surprised he's not as high as he would be on best singers list.

Actually, I think he's clearly straining on the final note of "Long Lonely Nights."

I know you were, so was I. :thumb:

But the rest of the points I made - about everyone disappearing once work had to be done - are true. This thread went from being very active to being a ghost town in no time flat. People need to stick around and make comments for things to get anywhere. Even if it means just asking a question to start a new topic for a few days, you need new posts by lots of different people to keep everyone interested. But when everybody stops taking part the thread, and the entire project, dies.

Sampson cited 110 singers so far, if I didn't counted wrong, between 40s and 50s.

And as I said earlier, I heard many songs in recent weeks, and if I were to choose the best singers mentioned so far, probably would be these:

(in no particular order)

Roy Hamilton
Little Willie John
Tony Williams (Platters)
Jesse Belvin
Elvis Presley
Little Richard
Tommy Braden (Four Blazes)
Pookie Hudson (Spaniels)
Sam Cooke
Ray Charles
Clyde McPhatter (Dominoes, Drifters)
Little Anthony Gourdine (The Imperials)
Jimmy Beaumont (The Skyliners)
Richard Berry
Joe Cook (Little Joe & The Thrillers)
Shep Sheppard (Heartbeats)
Carl Gardner (Coasters)
Gaynel Hodge (The Turks and The Hollywood Flames)
Willie Winfield (Harptones)
Pat Boone
Nate Nelson (Flamingos)
Ernie Warren (Cardinals)
Rudy West (5 Keys)
Bobby Lester (Moonglows)
Eugene Mumford (Larks, Dominoes)
Frankie Lymon (Teenagers)
Big Joe Turner
Bobby Freeman
Richard Blandon (Dubs)
Earl Carroll (Cadillacs)
Lee Andrews (Hearts)
Cliff Richard
Milton Love (Solitaires)

Yeah, you're right.

Glad to see Willie Winfield and Bobby Lester in the top 10.

Now on with the show...

1950's J-M

Little Willie John – tenor with unbelievable resonance, clear diction and a natural metallic echoed tone, maybe the most technically gifted singer of his era. An amazing pure voice, yet as skillful a singer with every stylistic nuance down pat.

What does "metallic" mean in this context?
