Btw The Martian has a 8.3 on IMDB, look at all the science fiction films rated below it and prepare to be upset, it's even one decimal point above Blade Runner, but that's natural for popular movies that have just come out right?

Right.

On the other hand The Dark Knight is still 9.0 despite being objectively terrible, in my humble opinion.

Look at where Dark Knight Rises sits in the top 250.

The Dark Knight Rises is in the top 250 at all? Fucking puke

Batman Returns

So yeah it doesn't hold together as well as the first Batman, which I now consider the best Batman movie unequivocally,

Halloween

I think John Carpenter has earned himself a place among my favorite directors, even if his best film (The Thing) is the one with the best production values, the fact his low budget outings can put so many big budget films to shame says a lot about his talent and how much good direction can really make a movie work no matter how cheap, simplistic and trashy it is. One thing I really admire about older horror movies is how much they achieve what they do without relying on blood and gore like modern horror movies do, granted many of my favorite horror movies are pretty gory, but good suspense and atmosphere are important components of them as well. Nowadays every horror movie has to have insanely over the top gore, even ones that are supposed to be about ordinary serial killers, people can become desensitized pretty easily to how unspectacular real life violence is, and the mundanity of the violence in this movie serves to make it that much more disturbing, because Myers's kills are so much more realistic than what you usually see in horror movies, not so much his slow movement and invincibility though, obviously. Oh and no matter how minimalistic and repetitive the score is, it's so amazingly effective, Carpenter is one of the most underrated film composers of all time.

Halloween III: The Season Of The Witch

No comment, other than WHAT THE FUCK?

Thumbs up to the above but just wanted to echo you and say Halloween is great (and that score is great). Also Season of the Witch might be the weirdest fucking idea ever for a sequel. I mean did they want the branding that much?

Spectre sucked. No good stunts. No good car chase. No good villian. Bond girl was flat. How come 00 cars never seem to have air bags? No memorable lines. The train fight scene was good, but meh. I hate the way daniel craig walks. And the voices of everyone seemed hollowed out and whispered. The casino royale construction crane scene was vastly better than mexico day of dead wall collapse.

I knew it was a departure from the series which is why I watched it, Carpenter wanted Halloween to be an anthology series with each film being a different story that takes place on Halloween night, which I think is a great idea and would have made the series waaaaaaaaaaaay more interesting than just rehashing Michael Myers over and over, but holy shit what the fuck was that?

The villian's whole scheme was the most convoluted, confusing thing I've ever seen in my life, he makes halloween masks implanted with microchips that make children become consumed from the inside out by bugs and snakes and shit, which only works when they watch the tv commercial for the masks while wearing the masks because it sends some kind of signal, and luckily every fucking kid in America is wearing one of the masks because those 3 masks are the only Halloween masks available anywhere, and he does all of this for shits and giggles pretty much, oh and there's androids, and something to do with fucking stonehenge and WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THAT GUY AT THE END? WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?

Directed by the same guy who did the IT miniseries, that's the only thing about all of this that makes sense.

Regarding some posts on the previous page about Aliens: it's not that good and Alien 3 is the only sequel that is also a great movie in its own right. The bluray of the Assembly Cut or whatever proved this to me. Fucked up that Fincher wanted CGI for this - a little too early in the game if you ask me - but other than that I think Alien Cubed is fucking awesome.

The problem with Alien³ is the story. Hicks and Newt survive Aliens only to die in the first five minutes of the sequel? And then they even kill off Ripley, one of the greatest heroines in the history of film.

Since the story of Aliens for me is little more than evil corporation + stupid marines going in space and using the xenomorphs as targets for their bigass guns, I think the story of Alien³ has way more substance. The characters are more human and complex, the visual style (both in art direction as cinematography) appeals to me way more, it has some of the most awesome special effects costume and make-up I have ever seen and what's more, Fincher had the balls to kill off his heroine.

Sleeping Beauty

For all the complaining about the two leads not being that interesting, they're not even the focus of the story, it's all the other characters that have everything at stake and make the film so entertaining and interesting, the fairies are great, the two kings while having maybe a little too much screentime are fun too, but yeah the main reason this film is so remembered is Maleficent, even though there isn't much to her character and her motivation is something so petty as being pissed off over not getting a party invitation, but it doesn't matter, she is plain and simply the coolest Disney villian of them all, her design, the beautiful way she's animated, that voice, and of course that final dragon form, that battle scene is one of the most epic and exciting scenes in any Disney film, it's just a shame it's so damn brief, but the film overall is just fucking gorgeous to look like, Eywind Earle's background art especially, and such a bold color pallette compared to the earlier Disney movies, it's also probably the first Disney fairy tale that actually captures the look of a beautiful fairy tale illustration. It's not one of the strongest Disney films in terms of story, but aesthetically it's one of their greatest achievements, and it absolutely holds up for it's visuals. It's one of my favorites.

Oh and that Maleficent movie looks like a fucking unwatchable piece of shit and seriously fuck anyone who thinks that shit was at all neccessary, it's the kind of garbage weeaboos on Deviantart come up with to "improve" the original story only to turn it into cliche anime fanfiction bullshit, fuck this obsession with giving everyone a tragic backstory, that isn't what makes good characers, Maleficent didn't need a fucking backstory to be a great villian when she was already a great fucking villian, some villians are evil just for the fuck of it and goddammit that's not a problem that needs fixing. FUCK that movie.

Maleficent

Incredible movie. One of the greatest of all time. My favourite part was the tragic backstory they gave her. You really need that in a villain it's so stupid when they're just evil for no reason. Huge improvement on the hacky cartoon horseshit

So poorly structured, the characters aren't even given a backstory.
