I say yes.

The kid who plays Bastion is a pretty bad actor, but other than that it holds up really damn well, the world is still as fucking awesome as it ever was, sure the green screen effects are pretty dated now but overall it still looks great aesthetically, and that Artax scene is still sad as fuck, my only other criticism of it is that it's so fast paced even for a kids movie, I wish it took it's time a little more.

I've heard rumors about a remake for years and I really hope that doesn't happen, remakes almost always suck and it especially pisses me off to see movies with great practical effects being remade with shitty CGI, fuck that.

I won't lie, I have a huge bias towards the era of practical effects, I understand the reasons why everything is CGI now, but I still think it's fucking bullshit, there's so many talented crafts people who can't get work in movies anymore, all because of the shitty nature of the business, it would be like if painters were put out of work because of the invention of photography.

But that's really only part of the problem, another problem is that the worlds aren't as imaginative anymore, or as aesthetically interesting, one of the things I love about the fantasy films of the 80s is that they actually look like fantasy illustrations brought to life, Brian Froud did the designs for Dark Crystal and Labyrinth and it fucking showed, fantasy movies today pretty much have one flavor, Tolkien and that's fucking it.

Honestly I'm actually kinda looking forward to the Warcraft movie if only because it's a different aeasthetic from what's been fucking done to death, I mean, a fantasy movie that isn't ashamed to look as goofy as it's source material? Sign me the fuck up for that.

Agreed with most of the above. Goofy fantasy ftw.

it definitely doesn't hold up as well but it's not a bad film objectively. nothing at all wrong with some nostalgia though.

Not at all, wasn't suggesting there is. I just wanted to know because I'm on a bit of a roll, '80s fantasy-wise. Watched Legend, The Dark Crystal, Willow and Labyrinth recently so I kinda want to keep riding that wave.

Any other suggestions for good fantasy are more than welcome.

Conan the Barbarian is a must. I hear Ladyhawke is quite good, too.

I've never been clear on what the fantasy genre exactly is. It's always seemed like a vague thing

anything with magical or supernatural elements is fantasy. then there are subgenres like high fantasy (lotr, got, wheel of time).

Oh man, Big Trouble in Little China is such a fave. One of the funniest movies ever made imo.

I like COnan the Barbarian. Highlander was awful, though.
Looking forward to Time Bandits and Baron Munchausen.

And yeah wanta, fantasy is all over the place. It's a Wonderful Life etc

I'd consider A Song of Ice and Fire low fantasy, at least up until this point, but I agree with your broad definition. I will add one caveat though: comic book heroes are mostly not fantasy, as supernatural powers in these universes have scientific explanations.

yeah I'd agree with this. i haven't read/watched GoT, why is it low fantasy? does it lack a serious focus on magical elements?

Aye. Essentially it's the Wars of the Roses set in a fictional medieval world but with fringe magical elements slowly becoming more prominent as the series progresses.

I had a huge crush on Atreyu as a kid, and was pissed off that they recast him in the second. One the flip side, the recast of Bastion was good and I had a crush on him.

Don't need to be gay to have a crush on a man. At various points in my life I've had crushes on Micheal Biehn as Kyle Reese in Terminator, Sean Bean and Juan Mata.
