Creed
8.7/10 Definitely in my top 5 (maybe even top 3) personal favorites of 2015 so far. Acting is excellent, it's a great tribute to the Rocky series while being it's own thing, and to be honest it made me cry. The other Rockys didn't. This year I almost cried watching Inside Out in the theater but it wasn't till I re-watched it on DVD with my family that it really made me cry. Point is, Creed was the first time since 2013 that I cried in the theater. It was actually a really good feeling.

Fiddler on the Roof

I'd say in actual fact I could give it a generous 3/10, but given the circumstances in which I was forced to watch it, 0/10. Truly horrible, and three hours of it.

Anybody else find a Michael Bay-directed Benghazi movie somewhat distasteful?

I thought it was generally agreed upon that a Michael Bay directed anything movie is somewhat distasteful.

The Incredibles

This is a fantastic movie, but there's one thing about it that really bugs me, it disturbs me in fact, and it's a big thing, and that is the impossible to avoid objectivist overtones of the movie, I know Bird says it's bullshit but as Dreww has said in the past movies can have clear political messages even if they're not intentional, and this is a movie that's flat out saying that some people are naturally born to be superior to others and things only go wrong when weak inferior people have a say in anything, you could say this is common subtext built into the superhero genre itself but this film is especially blunt about it in a way that Superman isn't (I actually think Superman is very left wing but I won't go into that right now), lines like "people keep coming up with new ways to celebrate mediocrity" and "when everyone is super, no one is" can't be interpreted any other way. I can't dismiss a film just for expressing political views I disagree with, but the views of Aynd Rand are especially rephrehensible, this movie is promoting what I think is a very dangerous, sociopathic philosophy to children. On a moral level I find this film very fucking troubling.

However everything else about it is perfect, the characters, the writing, the animation, the voice casting, the art design. The family relationships are beautifully realized and it's where this film's heart is, I will say this film isn't anywhere near as funny as most other Pixar movies, because it's sense of humor is very low key and all the jokes are just little throwaway moments that pop up naturally, I know a lot of people find the Edna characrter annoying but I found her pretty enjoyable and she doesn't get any more screentime than what is necessary, I think Syndrome is a particularly underrated villian, his backstory is an interesting one, his design is awesome and he looks exactly like what a nerdy, dorky kid trying to be a menacing villian would look like, and Jason Lee's vocal performance is great, he provides just the right mix of dorky and sinister, and his delivery provides some of the funniest moments in the film for me. It's a good thing Syndrome is entertaining too because it's with him where the film's political subtext is hardest to ignore, I mean what is this guy's big evil plan exactly? Giving everyone cool superweapons so they can feel more empowered. I mean REALLY? That's the most diabolical fucking thing you could think of Brad? Why not make him a community organizer we're you're at it.

The aesthetics are wonderful, the environments are a beautiful combination of art deco, Frank Lloyd Wright, 60s decor and a villianous lair more inspired by James Bond than the superhero genre, the characters all have the look of 2D characters rendered in 3D, with stylized animation that doesn't attempt to be realistic, which I think is the best way to animate human characters in CGI. Also the action sequences are incredible.

The only other thing left to say is that this is unmistakably a Brad Bird movie, I feel like he's the closest thing to a true auteur Pixar has, because I don't really know what defines a John Lasseter movie or a Pete Doctor movie or an Andrew Stanton movie but I know what defines a Brad Bird movie, other Pixar films seem to be more democratic and less defined by a personal vision or style, so Bird is something very unique for Pixar.

Wreck It Ralph

Not on par with Pixar but it's very enjoyable, this film is compared to Toy Story a lot but Nightmare Before Christmas is a much more fitting comparison, because it's about characters crossing between very different worlds. I wish the film was bigger in it's scope, we only ever get to see 3 worlds, and the cameos of real video game characters are very few and far between, I know the focus should be the story but compare it to how many cameos Roger Rabbit managed to cram in there without distracting from the story, here's hoping game central station plays a bigger role in the sequel.

The 4 main heroes are funny, charming and perfectly cast but I would have liked to see more of them and their interactions because we spend surprisingly little time with them, the film is so focused on moving it's plot foward that I think it's the film's biggest flaw, and it's a big flaw in many kids films, they just move too damn fast.

Lots of potential that I hope will be tapped into more in the sequel.

I hope it's a transgender black man, it'll be fun to see how the internet reacts to that one.

Yeah, I saw it, I didn't find it transphobic, I think they're just poking fun at the trend of androgynous models, I don't even think Cumberbatch's character is supposed to be transgender, so this is gonna be yet another instance of trans activists annoying everyone else and accomplishing nothing, they sure do that a lot don't they?

I will say that the punchline of that scene is painfully unfunny, I thought the first Zoolander was hilarious but I'm not feeling this one, however any film where Justin Bieber gets killed can't be all bad.
