Dude it's all over the place.

Maybe objectivist isn't the best word to use, but it certainly has a libertarian bent.

Sorry, I don't have my Problematic Politics Radar on when I'm watching a Pixar movie

The Flight of Dragons (1982)
8.2/10

Felt like some nostalgia and decided to watch a Dungeons and Dragons/Middle Earth type animated gem from my youth that I haven't seen this in almost 20 years. Much better than I thought it would be. As a kid I wasn't able to appreciate a lot the intelligent and deep things that the film had to offer. I loved the whole magic/fantasy vs. logic/science message. Also a pretty scary villain voiced by James Earl Jones. It's a really fun movie too and some parts are really exciting and I started to feel like a kid again. In addition to being a really good kids film, it's a great fantasy and adventure film all around.

There is a lot I might say about this movie, but this interview with the cinematographer touches on the lighting which is either a very important or very cliche aspect of the film.

I'd like to know your take on it! I found it to be pretty absorbing. Maybe my favorite of Spielberg's historical/humanistic films, simply in terms of craft.

I agree, the craft was amazing, but it felt a tad too David Lynchy at times, while straying into the Robert Young/Jane Wyatt -esqueness of Brooklyn home life a little too much. It dragged in the late middle. The loss of the Saks fifth mantel was way overdone as was the duration of the speeding Porsche. The punchline of the speeding Porsche was excellent though. The youths leaping fences east vs west was a bit overcooked as well. I hope this film is the beginning of much success for Max Mauff. Hanks is too old for this role and in no way reminds me of a devote irish catholic street fighter from ny city. This character screams for someone like a Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

I wonder what people's views are of this movie in light of gitmo and how that is being wound down?

A David Lynchy Spielberg movie? Now I'm intrigued.

Thanks for expanding on your thoughts. I don't know what the David Lynch comment means. You mean how pristine but also jokey and ironic the family scenes seem? Spielberg has been doing scenes like that since at least Close Encounters, maybe earlier. But then again I'm someone whose spontaneous sense is that Eraserhead is more normal to me than a Clint Eastwood film, so I'm probably not even a good judge of what is and isn't Lynchian at this point. I did not think the speeding Porsche went on very long at all. I agree about the overcooked feeling of the over-the-wall parallelism but then whoever is screenwriting my life has had me observe even more forceful cliches. I disagree about Hanks not being right for the part, I thought he was perfect for this; he seems like a classic Capra "standing man" more than anyone I could think of, and I normally dislike non-Toy Story Hanks very much. Daniel Patrick Moynihan?! Anyway, it's an absorbing effective film that isn't perfect, but it's nice to, for once in my life, see a film with my dad that has political implications where we don't leave the theater arguing viciously.
