I agree that "I'm a Man" shouldn't be in the top 10, and I would support replacing it with either "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" or "Saturday in the Park". I would probably also drop "Look Away" so that both songs could be added. LA did go to #1, but HtSIS and SitP were also big hits, and I think both have been more enduringly popular, and both were more important to Chicago's career.

'Southern California Purples' is an excellent, albeit lesser known song from the first record. Probably not top ten but quite good.

The Metallica list looks like it was made by metalheads for metalheads. Really? No Nothing Else Matters?

I agree that "Nothing Else Matters" should be there. Also, "Enter Sandman" should be a shoo-in for #1.

Agreed, although I prefer (like most) their first albums, those are their only songs that have reached mainstream popularity (well, maybe One too). I don't really know how I would order it, but the top 5 should be Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, One, Master of Puppets, and Fade to Black.

Yeah, those are the five I'd go with, too. For the Top 10, I'm thinking something like this:

1. Enter Sandman
2. One
3. Master of Puppets
4. Nothing Else Matters
5. Fade to Black
6. Creeping Death
7. The Unforgiven
8. Seek & Destroy
9. Battery
10. For Whom the Bell Tolls

Looks good, though I would switch Creeping Death with Seek and Destroy.

OK, based on the discussions, are we OK with these?

Metallica (revision)

1. Enter Sandman
2. One
3. Master of Puppets
4. Nothing Else Matters
5. Fade to Black
6. Seek & Destroy
7. The Unforgiven
8. Creeping Death
9. Battery
10. For Whom the Bell Tolls

Chicago (revision)

1. 25 Or 6 To 4
2. If You Leave Me Now
3. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?
4. Hard To Say I'm Sorry
5. Make Me Smile
6. Beginnings
7. Colour My World
8. Saturday In The Park
9. You're The Inspiration
10. Hard Habit To Break

Note that the old Metallica list is also on the Metal list, where perhaps it should stay.

Train's list is wildly out of date. Here's the current version:

1. Drops of Jupiter
2. Calling All Angels
3. When I Look To The Sky
4. Meet Virginia
5. Cab
6. Ordinary
7. Free
8. Get To Me
9. Give Myself to You
10. For Me, It's You

Adding in their hits since the list was made, I'm proposing:

Train (revision)

1. Hey Soul Sister
2. Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)
3. Drive By
4. Calling All Angels
5. When I Look To The Sky
6. Meet Virginia
7. 50 Ways To Say Goodbye
8. If It's Love
9. Marry Me
10. Cab

And here are two new lists:

The Smithereens

1. Behind The Wall Of Sleep
2. A Girl Like You
3. Blood And Roses
4. Only A Memory
5. Too Much Passion
6. Blues Before And After
7. Miles From Nowhere
8. Top Of The Pops
9. House That We Used To Live In
10. Strangers When We Meet

The Raspberries

1. Go All The Way
2. I Wanna Be With You
3. Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)
4. It's Cold Outside [The Choir]
5. Let's Pretend
6. Tonight
7. Don't Want To Say Goodbye
8. I'm A Rocker
9. Drivin' Around
10. Crusin' Music

The Choir was an early version of the group before Eric Carmen joined. I think it's more relevant than adding another album track to the list.

Does anyone feel qualified to make a list for Justin Beiber?

Initially, I was shocked that you'd place "Drops of Jupiter" anywhere but #1, but after looking at the band's chart history (and sales), yeah, it seems that "Hey, Soul Sister" was actually Train's most successful single (which is a shame, as it's putrid).

I am curious, though, as to why "When I Look to the Sky" is as high as #5. It wasn't as big as anything else on the list, save for "Cab". I'm on board with the rest of the order.

All of the older stuff I just kept where it was on the older version. Since I didn't think anything newer belonged between "Calling All Angels" and "Meet Virginia", I just left it between them. But I don't know why it would be so high, and I have no objection to dropping it to 9 if no one else objects.

I don't know where I would put WILttS on the Train list, but I would at least move "Meet Virginia" ahead of it.

I very much agree with ES at #1 on the Metallica list and adding NEM. As popular as that song is in Europe, I'd say #4 is if anything a little low, but adding it in the top 5 is a big improvement.

For the Raspberries, "Let's Pretend" was a hit, so I'd think it would belong ahead of "It's Cold Outside".

Here's where the songs on Brett's Chicago list rank on DDD's yearly lists:

1. 25 Or 6 To 4 26
2. If You Leave Me Now 21
3. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? 113
4. Hard To Say I'm Sorry 38
5. Make Me Smile 90
6. Beginnings 57
7. Colour My World 78
8. Saturday In The Park 39
9. You're The Inspiration 61
10. Hard Habit To Break 65

We don't have to try to make this list completely consistent with those, but maybe a little closer would be good. So how about this:

1. 25 Or 6 To 4
2. If You Leave Me Now
3. Hard To Say I'm Sorry
4. Saturday In The Park
5. Beginnings
6. Make Me Smile
7. Colour My World
8. You're The Inspiration
9. Hard Habit To Break
10. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

Well, "Let's Pretend" hit the 30s nationally, while "Cold" hit the 60s, but the latter was number one in Cleveland and big in some other Midwest markets, and it was their first success. Close call.

OK, I didn't know that "It's Cold Outside" charted at all. I guess that one could go either way.

One over Master of Puppets? Is that reasoning due to the popularity surge after Guitar Hero 3 came out? MoP is their "signature song", after all.

I think "One"'s advantage in popularity is greater than "Master of Puppets"'s advantage in acclaim/impact (and I don't think there's much difference in influence). Besides considering simply their respective chart runs and certified sales, "One" is also considerably more popular on RateYourMusic, as far as ratings and reviews go. Additionally, the music video for "One" was Metallica's breakthrough on MTV.
