"Friends", I think, is one of their more underrated tunes.

it is some of their best instrumentation. i think some of the bad vocal melodies (mmm mmm i'm tellin you naaaw!) keep people away from listing it as a fav

Fuckin' Zeppelin hipsters. I honestly prefer Presence to III. Possibly even In Through the Out Door.

That kind of contrarianism seems much more hipster to me.

In my extensive, scientific analysis, I've worked out that anything I like is cheesy and lame. Stuff that's equally, if not more, cheesy and lame that I don't rate that highly is either ironic genius or genuinely good. Katy Perry? Bah, she's shit. Lady Gaga on the other hand: 10/10 material right there.

Presence is up there with Led Zep's best. Achilles Last Stand is immense, standing toe-to-toe with epics like of Stairway to Heaven and No Quarter. Tea For One displays some of Page's finest lead playing and is easily and equal of Since I've Been Loving You in the slow blues department. Nobodies Fault But Mine is a solid medium tempo track. I can't really remember the rest of the tracks at the moment, but the same can be said of half of Led Zeppelin III.

I'll have to revisit III before the fan favorite consensus changes (it was Physical Graffiti that everybody loved for awhile, wuddnt it)

Yep. Another album that I've never been able to enjoy as much as other people seem to.

There's more Zeppelin songs I hate on Physical Graffiti than any other Zep album apart from Coda (which is shit from start to finish). It's a double, though, so there's a lot of good stuff, too. But that trifecta of "Custard Pie/Trampled Under Foot/The Wanton Song" encapsulate everything I hate about Led Zeppelin: Thudding rhythms, caterwauling vocals, dull riffs repeated ad infinitum, guitar tone set to "annoy."

LZ III, on the other hand, has only one song I dislike, and that's (of course) the final track. Everything else I pretty much love.

That trifecta is glorious. Groovy heavy sexy. Three qualities they all deliver in abundance.

Dreww had a really good post once about the genius of "Hats Off to Roy Harper" but I'm assuming he deleted it.
