ToP is legendary funk of course, however it was a little different of an experience to see them at a sit down venue. I would have preferred a different venue for that hot horn section.

Why would you have a sit down ToP concert?

riot fest chicago a few weeks ago:

SATURDAY SEP 17th
Motion City Soundtrack - fairly good, but i was far away and couldn't get the full feel. kinda wish i had went and at least saw The Hold Steady for a bit
Bob Mould - really good and i wish i had got closer and stayed for the whole thing. caught the first half or so
People Under the Stairs - caught a few songs while in line for water and like them
The Hives - only watched a few songs and was kind of annoyed
Fitz and the Tantrums - decent. stayed for a bit and then went to catch GZA
GZA - not as good as i hoped.
Descendents - best show of the day by far. and enough people were occupied with Brand New that i got up close.
Brand New - only watched one or two songs from a distance and i guess i saw the hype? idk, not really my thing
Method Man & Redman - awesome. only thing that sucked was the scheduling made us jump around a lot to see different artists so i couldn't stay for the whole show
Social Distortion - pretty much skipped it because i've seen them before and will see them again and i can't say the same about Meth/Red or Death Cab. but i caught a song and the crowd was on fire. i have no doubt they were among the best of the day if i had watched them. if i had never seen the before, this would have been my number 1 priority.
Death Cab for Cutie - reminded me of when i saw Radiohead live back when In Rainbows came out, in the sense that i like the music but bored by the show live.
Morrissey - felt obligated to see him because he was technically the headliner of the day. watched like 30 minutes of youtube videos on a large screen while waiting for him to come out and basically be a glorified vegas singer. not impressed.
Nas - left Morrissey after 20 minutes to watch the rest of Nas and he was awesome. no regrets on that decision.

SUNDAY SEP 18th
Juliette Lewis & the Licks - caught a bit of this show right when we got there and it was good
Andrew W.K. - awesome, even though we were far back because he was the first exciting show of the day
Tiger Army - we stayed at A.W.K. so long that we were way too far away to really enjoy this, but i love Tiger Army anyway
Chevy Metal - had no idea this was basically Foo Fighters without Dave, playing nothing but covers. i spent the whole show wondering why the fuck they got booked until i found that out.
The Julie Ruin - my girlfriend really enjoyed them but they seemed like they never rehearsed and yeah i totally agree with her politics but i'm not sure why she was yelling at us seeing as how we're obviously fans of hers that's why we are watching her.
Underoath - nothing else was going on. they tried though. just not my style at all.
Deftones - she was trying to get up close for Misfits while i was just waiting for Sleater-Kinney to come on on a different stage. i left this like 20 minutes before S-K was even going on cause i was bored. good showmanship i just wasn't in to the music.
Sleater-Kinney - best show overall by far. got up close cause everyone was too worried about Deftones, Zombie and Misfits on the other stages, and loved every second of it. had to leave with about 10 minutes left to see a little Rob Zombie cause they overlapped completely.
Rob Zombie - saw Dragula and heard him bitch about people on cell phones and enjoyed both of those things. i'm not sure when Rob Zombie became dad rock but i think it happened, if not musically than at least in spirit.
Misfits - music was solid, but Danzig was bitchy and kept blaming the techs for shitty mics and asking if we were tired after like 20 minutes of playing and everyone was pretty much like "um, yeah a little bit, its been anywhere from 6 to 10 hours here for most of us and you look winded after 20 minutes, so why are you judging us?" he just rubbed me the wrong way, but the band was really good and i love their music to begin with so i'll forgive it.

best shows:
1. Sleater-Kinney
2. Andrew W.K.
3. Descendents
4. Redman & Method Man
5. Misfits

biggest regrets:
1. not getting up close and seeing more of Bob Mould
2. not getting close enough for Tiger Army
3. not being able to see Social Distortion
4. having to choose between Sleater-Kinney and Rob Zombie so missing basically all of RZ
5. straight up just skipping Bad Religion cause we were tired and hungry

If Morrissey starts to annoy you just throw a bottle of water at his head and he'll go away.

The venue he performed at really sucks. This shitty observatory by where my parents live where you can't even smoke weed inside with the super strict security.

Quite a damn shame how I was the only person in the crowd who knew who Joy Division was.

both these sentences, firstly you sneak weed in and then smoke at your own risk since 99% of venues don't allow smoking indoors.

2ndly, i'm 100% sure that you were not the only one in the crowd that knew joy division lol

Saw local natives last night with charlotte day wilson opening. She was really cool. Has a very sultry jazzy sound and thought it was a good opener for local natives. Even though the new local natives album seemed a bit uninspired, their live shows never are. Such a tight band pretty amazing how they have 3 great singers in one band. Always have had a good time seeing them.
