Song #99 was "Drive-In" from the "All Summer Long" Album in 1964. Once again it was Mike Love on the lead vocal. This is one of several songs that was originally listed as being written solely by Brian Wilson, but many years later, after a lawsuit, this song and several others now show Mike Love as a co-writer. "Drive-In" won the tie breaker over "Santa's Beard" as each song had 73 total points in the balloting.

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS
100 - Santa's Beard ---------------------------2 -------73
099 - Drive-In ---------------------------------2--------73

Coming up next at #98 is a song that the Boys did two very different versions of with the second version coming 12 years after the first version. The one that made our countdown is the first song from 1967 to appear on our countdown:

Song #98 was "Here Comes The Night" from the "Wild Honey" album in late 1967. Brian sings the lead vocal and the songwriting is credited to Brian and Mike. In 1979 the band redid the song on the L.A. (Light Album) with Carl on the lead vocal. It was a disco sound and even featured a remixed long-assed disco version that was released on a 12 inch. Here's the 1979 version:

Next up is song #97. Like #98, it is from 1967, but this time it's from the "Smiley Smile" album. It's the first of 5 songs from that album that are in the top 100:

Song # 97 is "With Me Tonight" from the "Smiley Smile" album in 1967. The song has been characterized as "Psychedelic Doo Wop. One of Brian's vocal instructions to the group was to sing the song while smiling. Brian wrote the song and Carl sings lead. It was recorded in Brian's home studio.

The #96 song was "Summer's Gone" from 2012. The earliest song on this list is from 1961, so that means that the top 100 spans 52 years for the band. It came from the album "That's Why God Made The Radio," which at that time was their first album of original material in 20 years. It was also the first album that original member David L. Marks was on since 1963.

The track "Summer's Gone" was originally meant to be the final song on the final Beach Boys album, and the album's original title was Summer's Gone with the intention that it would be the final Beach Boys album. It was changed when Brian decided he would like to record a follow-up. The song was written in reflection of his mother's death and the end of Carl's life, who died two months after their mother.

The album debuted on Billboard at No. 3 and became the group's highest charting album in 37 years—since 1974's compilation Endless Summer and highest charting studio album since 1965's "Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)." It also became the band's first top 10 studio album since 1976's "15 Big Ones" and the highest debuting album of their entire career. The album made its debut in the UK charts at number 15 giving the group their highest studio album debut since 1971's Surf's Up. The album debuted at number 15 on the Canadian Albums Chart.

Coming up now at #95 is another 1967 track.

The #95 song was "Country Air" from the "Wild Honey" album in 1967. That album was supposed to be the Band's answer to soul music, and included their version of "I Was Made To Love Her," the Stevie Wonder hit. Don't worry, that one DID NOT make the list, although I know at least one schlub who claims that the Beach Boys version is better than Stevie's version.

Next up is the #94 song. It's the first of 4 tracks on the countdown from the 1973 album "Holland."

The #94 song is "California Saga (Big Sur)" from the "Holland" album in 1973. It was part of a 3 song medley, a trilogy I guess, of different "California Saga" parts. This part was written by Mike Love, and he sings the lead vocal. The album was supposed to have been recorded in France, but somehow instead it was done in Holland, hence the album title.

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS

Up next is the #93 song in the countdown. It's the first of 7 songs in the top 100 from the 1970 album "Sunflower."

The #93 song was "Our Sweet Love" from the "Sunflower" album. Carl sang the lead vocal and also played the guitar solo which is reminiscent of some of George Harrison's solos with the Beatles. The songwriting credit went to Brain, Carl and Al on this one.

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS
093 - Our Sweet Love ---------------------------3--------87

099 - Drive-In ------------------------------------2 -------73

Next we have song #92. The song "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" was written by Bobby Troup and it was recorded by several acts including the Four Freshmen, who were the biggest influence on the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys. Mike Love rewrote the lyrics of the song and also changed the title and the Beach Boys recorded it. I believe that it's the only song on the countdown that is a capella.

The #92 song was "A Young Man Is Gone" from 1963. So far it's the oldest record to show up on the countdown. It's from the "Little Deuce Coupe" album, which is a weird album in that the title track was already on the prior album that was released, "Surfer Girl." There are 10 more songs to come from 1963. For those who care about lyrics, "A Young Man Is Gone" is a tribute to James Dean.

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS
092 - A Young Man Is Gone --------------------2--------89
093 - Our Sweet Love --------------------------3--------87

Up next is the #91 song on the list. We go back to 1964 again for another song from the "All Summer Long" album.

We just heard the #91 song on the list, "We'll Run Away," from the "All Summer Long" album in 1964. There are 6 more songs still to come from that classic LP. The song was written by Brian and Gary Usher, and is done in 12/8 time. For the lyrics crowd, it's about a certain type of teen angst that would culminate more fully in "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

RANK - SONG TITLE -------- TOTAL BALLOTS - POINTS
091 - We'll Run Away ---------------------------2-------90
092 - A Young Man Is Gone ---------------------2-------89

Okay, we move on now to song #90. We're gonna go to 1977 for the only song on the countdown from the "Love You" album.

The # 90 song was "The Night Was So Young" from the "Love You" album in 1977. Carl sings the lead on this one with Brian. The album cover was designed by Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean. The album is considered to be a proto synth pop experiment by Brian. The experiment did not turn out that well apparently as this was the only track from the album to make our Top 100 list.

Breaking into the 80s now we have song #89 next. Back to 1970 for the second of 7 tracks in the Top 100 from the "Sunflower" album.

Song # 89 was "Cool Cool Water" from the "Sunflower" album in 1970. The song was written by Brian and Mike. Brian first wrote the music for the song in March 1967 when he moved into his new house in Belair. The song was first recorded in 1967 but did not make the cut for either the "Smiley Smile" or the "Wild Honey" album and was discarded. Three years later, Lenny Waronker, then an A&R executive at Warner Music, heard the unfinished tape, and convinced Brian Wilson to finish the track for Sunflower. With new lyrics from Mike Love, the song was recorded for "Sunflower" and even came out in an edited version as the A side of a single. Brian and Mike shared the lead vocal duties.

Next up is song #88 on the countdown. It's a remake of a song that was a hit in 1959.

Song #88 was "Hushabye" from 1964 on the "All Summer Long" album. The song was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and was a top 20 hit for the Mystics in 1959. Once again Brian and Mike sing the lead vocal.

088 - Hushabye ---------------------------------3-------95

Up now at #87 is a song that I would never have been able to identify as by the Beach Boys. It sounds nothing like their usual style, with acoustic instruments and no vocal harmony. Al wrote the song with a partner and he sings the vocal.

Song #86 was "Let Him Run Wild" from 1965. It's the first of 6 songs on the list from the "Summer Days (And Summer Nights)" album. It was also on the flip side of "California Girls" as a single. The song foreshadows the complicated production that was to come on "Pet Sounds." The song was written by Brian and Mike with Brian singing the lead vocal. Brian later reflected that his vocal on the track was too shrill, saying, "I sounded like a little girl," and "I sounded like a fairy," naming it his least favorite Beach Boys recording.
