Song #59 was "Surfin" which was the Beach Boys first record. It was first released in November 1961. Written by Mike and Brian. I spelled th title without an apostrophe after the n because that's how it was spelled on the label of the record. I always thought that it came out fiorst on X and then on Candix, but it seems that the first Candix pressing is the original based on the story below.

There's a cool story involved which I will get into now with some of the Wikipedia article about the song. It was released as the first Beach Boys single (with "Luau" on the B-side) in November 1961 on Candix Records and it later appeared on the 1962 album Surfin' Safari.

The single effectively began the Beach Boys' music career, establishing them at the vanguard of what would later be regarded the "California Sound". Initially, the group were trying to think of something original and creative that they could write a song about. Brian Wilson remembers that "One day, my brother Dennis came home from the beach and said, 'Hey, surfing's getting really big. You guys ought to write a song about it."

The song features Mike Love on lead vocals with Carl Wilson on backing vocals and acoustic guitar, Al Jardine on backing vocals and stand-up bass, Brian Wilson on backing vocals and snare drum and Dennis Wilson on backing vocals. The single peaked at number 75 in the US; it was never released in the UK.

Brian Wilson remembers that "I began noodling around the piano singing 'surfin', surfin', surfin''. It sounded stupid. But then Mike [Love] sang 'ba-ba-dippity-dippity-ba-ba.' He was fooling around, trying to spark a new idea with the same bass sounds he'd sung countless times before. For some reason, though, this time when he sang I pounded out a few chords to accompany him and then he took up the chant I'd been singing, 'surfin', surfin''." Brian continues that "twenty seconds later, I had the opening for the song that would become the Beach Boys' first hit single. A couple of hours later, I finished the song and called it 'Surfin''." The'ba-ba-dippity-dippity-ba-ba' were influenced by the early Jan and Dean records (like "Baby Talk") Brian also incorporated a riff from "Underwater", a nationally charting single by The Frogmen (also on Candix).

While a student at Hawthorne High School in 1960, Brian Wilson submitted "Surfin'" as an assignment in a music class and received an "F" from his teacher, Fred Morgan. In 2018, the school changed the grade to an "A."

Brian Wilson recalls that "the five of us arrived at the Morgans' Melrose Avenue office." The group sang a cover version of "Sloop John B", though Hite Morgan's response was "these days you need something original. You've gotta have an angle. The music business is all about selling a product." Brian remembers that "there was a long, awkward moment of silence that caught us looking at our shoelaces." Dennis Wilson then surprised the other group members by responding, "Yeah, we got an original. It's called 'Surfin''." Hite Morgan then asked them to play the song but as Brian recalls he responded, "Well, it's not finished. We've got the song, and it's original. But it's not done yet."

When it came time to record their new song, the group (then calling themselves The Pendletones) went back to the Morgans' studio for a second time. Audree Wilson remembers that Brian, Mike, Carl and Al were at the Morgans' studio recording a demo when they said, "We want to play this for you." So they played the demo of "Surfin'" to Dorinda Morgan and Hite Morgan of Hite Morgan's Recording Studio. Dorinda Morgan was excited by the demo as Audree recalls "Immediately, she said, 'Drop everything, we want to record that.' He [Hite] wasn't so much in favour of it, but she heard something she thought would click."

Brian remembers that "we were at the Morgans' all day; twelve takes of 'Surfin''...tried everyone's patience. I was to blame. I wanted the song to sound perfect." Brian remembers that they "did it all live. Our mix wasn't as good [as today's mix], it wasn't as balanced. You couldn't hear the guitar playing...you didn't hear the bass notes as well...some of the vocals were a little buried. It wasn't mixed and balanced very well. And my father was critical of the first thing we did, he said, 'Well, look, you don't hear the guitar, you don't hear this, what is going on here? Listen, I'm going to have to take over as producer', which he did. He took over as producer."

Brian recalls that "Hite [Morgan] announced that he was going to turn our demo into a record, press up a small quantity, and see how it did on local radio." When the group unpacked the first box of singles from Candix, they found that their band name had been changed from "The Pendletones" to "The Beach Boys". Label promotion man Russ Regan explained to Murry Wilson that he had taken the liberty of giving the group a new name to associate them more directly with the popular surf-music genre.

Dennis Wilson remembers "the first time we ever heard our record played [on the radio], We [Carl, Brian, Dennis and David Marks] were all on Hawthorne Boulevard in Brian's 1957 Ford...they said, 'Here's a group from Hawthorne, California; the Beach Boys, with their song, 'Surfin''. It was a contest; they played three songs and the one that got the most requests over the phone was the one they would add to the playlist. We were screamin' in the street, and knockin' on everybody's door, 'We got a record on the radio!'...That was the biggest high ever.

Nothing will ever top the expression on Brian's face. Ever...THAT is the all-time moment."

Dennis remembers that they "got so excited hearing our record on the radio that Carl threw up". Brian recalls that he "ran down the street screaming". Russ Regan, the man who gave the Beach Boys their name, remembers that "Surfin'" "actually exploded here in the city of Los Angeles. Their record was a big record here. It was just a natural Southern California record." By the final weeks of 1961 "Surfin'" had sold more than 40,000 copies. Over the following months (until pressed copies ran out in mid-spring 1962) the raw but radical new sound of the Beach Boys entered the top five in San Diego, San Bernardino, Mojave and crossing the California border into Arizona at Yuma; was seen in the lower reaches of playlists in San Francisco (KYA) and Seattle (KAYO); and appeared in the Northeast, peaking at #21 at Boston's WHIL for two weeks in late March and April.

Confusingly, "Surfin'" was seemingly released three times in three months on (apparently) two different labels: Candix 331 in November 1961, X 301 in December and Candix 301 in January 1962. The full story is complex and still imperfectly understood, but in simple form, when the owners of Candix went back to the pressing plant to order more of 331, they were told to settle their bills first, so in order to maintain a flow of singles they had another plant press the record, hence the X 301 release (which is far and away the rarest of all). When sufficient cash had been raised for a further repressing on Candix, the number 301 was retained, possibly for the sake of continuity, possibly as a slip of the pen.

Song #58 was "Let's Go Away For Awhile," another instrumental from the "Pet Sounds" album. Despite how big that album is, I don't get this innocuous instrumental finishing this high. The song was also issued on the flip side of "Good Vibrations" as a single. The track was composed and produced by Brian Wilson and was originally titled "The Old Man and The Baby." Brian had a Burt Bacharach sound in mind when he wrote the song. None of the members of the Beach Boys played on the record.

Song #57 is "I Know There's An Answer" from the "Pet Sounds" album. If you know what "Dog Ears" means then you are a big Beach Boys fan. Around the time when "Pet Sounds" was being recorded Mike started referring to Brian as "Dog Ears." This is because Brian was always hearing something wrong with a playback that none of the other guys in the group could hear. Brian was always a perfectionist when it came to making a record, but became even more so with the "Pet Sounds" project, and then with "Good Vibrations." Brian wrote the song with lyrical help from Mike and the group's road manager Terry Sachen. It is characterized by its unusual juxtaposition of instrumentation which unfolds as the song progresses, which include tack piano, bass harmonica, banjos, saxophones, flutes, and organ. Glen Campbell plays the banjo on the track.

Love was not originally listed as co-writer, and only received his credit after a 1990s court case. During the song's recording sessions, conflicts arose between Brian and Mike. Love thought it was "too much of a doper song" and suggested that it should instead be about "finding yourself". After careful consideration, Wilson allowed Love to revise some of the song's lyrics, renaming it from "Hang On to Your Ego" to "I Know There's an Answer". The song's references to LSD were ultimately kept in its lyrics.

Song #56 is "Little Girl I Once Knew" from 1965. It did not appear on an album until "Best of the Beach Boys - Vol. 3" in 1968. The story is that it only got to #20 on the Billboard singles chart because many stations did not like to play it because there are several spots in the record where there is dead air for a couple of seconds. AllMusic called the song "a virtual link between the slightly progressive work on songs such as 'California Girls' and the then-quantum leap taken by Wilson on Pet Sounds and 'Good Vibrations'"

John Lennon raved about the record, saying "This is the greatest! Turn it up, turn it right up. It's GOT to be a hit. It's the greatest record I've heard for weeks. It's fantastic. I hope it will be a hit. It's all Brian Wilson. He just uses the voices as instruments. He never tours or anything. He just sits at home thinking up fantastic arrangements out of his head. Doesn't even read music. You keep waiting for the fabulous breaks. Great arrangement. It goes on and on with all different things. I hope it's a hit so I can hear it all the time."

At #55 we heard "Be True To Your School" from the "Little Deuce Coupe" album in 1963. It reached #6 on the U.S. singles chart, flipped with "In My Room" which has not shown up yet. The link featured the single version of the song which includes the Honeys as the cheerleaders. The album version just had the Beach Boys singing without the Honeys. The song features the melody of the University of Wisconsin's fight song, "On, Wisconsin!", although it is a tribute to Hawthorne High School, which the Wilson brothers attended. Hawthorne High School's fight song uses the same melody as "On Wisconsin". The members of the Honeys were Marilyn Wilson, Diane Rovell, and Ginger Blake. David L. Marks was on this record. That's him on the bottom middle below. Al was not in the picture:

Song #54 is "Little Honda" from the "All Summer Long" album in 1964. When Capitol did not issue the song as a single Mercury rushed out a cover of the song by a studio group known as the Hondells, and that version was top 10 on the Billboard singles chart. Capitol issued an EP (extended play) 45 with 4 songs from the "All Summer Long" album and a couple of the songs made the Billboard singles chart from the EP. In those days Billboard would chart songs from an EP on the singles chart, although only the most major of major acts would be able to place a song from an EP on to the chart. Beatles, Elvis , etc... So the Beach Boys version of "Little Honda" did eventually chart from the EP, peaking at #65.

Song #52 is "This Whole World" from the "Sunflower" album in 1970. It is the 5th of 7 songs from that album on the countdown, two more still to come. Brian wrote this one alone and Carl sings the lead vocal. Brian has said of the track: "A very special vocal by Carl, and the lyrics are very spiritual. The melody and chord pattern rambles but it comes back to where it started." On the lyrics, he says: "It’s about love in general. ... That song came from deep down in me, from the feeling I had that the whole world should be about love. When I wrote that song I wanted to capture that idea.'"

Song #51 was "Girl Don't Tell Me" from 1965. It was on the "Summer Days (And Summer Nights)" album and also on the B side of "Barbara Ann" on the single. Brian Wilson wrote the song in early 1965 while on honeymoon with Marilyn. He recalled that "a whole song came to me. It was 'Girl Don't Tell Me.' I didn't have any way to get it down. But I just heard the whole thing up there, from start to finish, and I remembered it well enough to go later and write down the lyrics on a piece of paper."

It was one of the first songs to feature Carl Wilson as lead vocalist (his first unshared lead was on "Pom Pom Play Girl"), and is one of the few Beach Boys tracks from the era to feature no backing vocals. It was also the first recording session that Bruce Johnston participated in as a member of The Beach Boys. Beach Boys biographer David Leaf has likened "Girl Don't Tell Me" to the Beatles' 1965 single "Ticket to Ride", in terms of its guitar breaks, drum fills and vocal delivery. Brian Wilson cited this as an example of how each new Beatles release over this period inspired him as a songwriter, and how, with "Girl Don't Tell Me", "I even tried writing a Beatles song." He said that Carl's drawn-out phrasing over the words "you'll write" was taken from "Ticket to Ride". It has been claimed that Brian intended to submit "Girl Don't Tell Me" to the Beatles.

Song #48 was "All I Wanna Do" from the "Sunflower" album in 1970. It has been retrospectively cited as the earliest example of chillwave and a precursor to the shoegazing genre. In 1970, Jim Miller of Rolling Stone noted production elements made the listening experience "mind-wrenching". Matthew Greenwald called the song a lost classic, writing: "Possibly one of the most beautiful and unusual songs and recordings on the Sunflower album... Mike Love deserves high marks for his vocal and lyric contributions, which may be his most tasteful in the scope of the entire Beach Boys canon. Brian Wilson's haunting, minor-key melody and ghostly arrangement is truly bittersweet evidence that he had certainly not lost his artistic grasp." Greenwald went on to give accolades to the song's arrangement, citing the effectiveness of the piccolo snare drum and the interesting, well-executed harmonies.

Chillwave is a music microgenre that emerged in the late 2000s. It is characterized by a faded or dreamy retro pop sound, escapist lyrics about the beach or summer, psychedelic or lo-fi aesthetics, mellow vocals, low-to-moderate tempos, effects processing (especially reverb), and vintage synthesizers. The term was originally synonymous with "glo-fi" or "hypnagogic pop".

The #47 song is "Disney Girls (1957)" from the "Surf's Up" album in 1971. It edged out the #48 song on a tie breaker as it was on more ballots. This song was Bruce Johnston's greatest moment as a member of the group. He wrote the song and sings the lead vocal. The song is a nostalgic reflection sung from the viewpoint of a man who rejects reality in favor of the nostalgia he felt towards the fantasy world of the women in Walt Disney cartoons, songs by Patti Page and the days he made wine in his garage, enjoying lemonade in the country shade.

Song #46 is next. It's been a long time since we heard a track from the "Smiley Smile" album. This one is not my style, but it was listed on 7 ballots and accumulated 295 points in the balloting:

Song #46 is "Wonderful" from the "Smiley Smile" album in 1967. The song was written by Brian and Van Dyke Parks, although Parks name is not there on the album credits for this song. The song's title derives from a pet name Brian Wilson had for his wife Marilyn.

Author Andrew Hickey wrote of the song, "If there was any justice in the world, this song would now be regarded as every bit the classic that "God Only Knows" is, as on every level that matters – musical and lyrical sophistication, beauty, the compassion that pours out of every syllable of the song – this is the superior of that song and almost every other I've heard." In 2011 Mike Love commended Parks' "marvelous job" with the lyrics and has described the piece as beautiful and sensitive, possessing ability to move listeners to tears. He told Goldmine magazine "‘Wonderful’ is an amazing, amazing piece of work. Holy shit! Van Dyke and Brian did a great collaboration on that one. It’s a really beautiful song. That’s probably my favorite thing from the Smile project.” Power pop musician Matthew Sweet praised the Smile version for its baroque feel, whereas "it gets a little more trivialized on Smiley Smile". Carl sings the lead on the version from "Smiley Smile." Brian sings the lead on the version on "The Smile Sessions."

Song #45 is "Do You Wanna Dance" from the "Today" album in 1965. It's a remake of Bobby Freeman's hit record from 1958. The Ramones later did a version of the song that seems to have been modeled on the Beach Boys version. It came out as a single before the album was released, and it is the biggest hit record by the group that features Dennis on the lead vocal.
