Song #108 was "I Wanna Be Your Man," the Lennon-McCartney song that the Beatles and Stones both recorded in 1963. This was the first Rolling Stones record to reach the top 20 in the UK, peaking at #12.

Song #107 was "I Don't Know Why" from the "Metamorphosis" album in 1975. The son was written and originally done by Stevie Wonder. It was the flip side of "My Cherie Amour" and was a hit in its own right. The Stones recorded this in 1969, when the Stevie Wonder record was a current hit, but it did not get released until 1975. Here is Stevie's version:

Song #106 was "Country Honk" from the "Let It Bleed" album in 1969. God only knows why they decided not to put "Honky Tonk Women" on the album and to instead include this. Supposedly this was how the song was originally conceived. Nanette Workman sings background vocals on the track, and Byron Berline played the fiddle.

Song #105 was "Yesterday's Papers" from the "Between The Buttons" album in 1967. This is the first song that Mick wrote for the band all by himself. In the song, recorded in late 1966, Brian Jones's vibraphone and Jack Nitzsche's harpsichord are prominent: Keith Richards plays a distorted guitar with Charlie Watts on drums and Bill Wyman on bass. The song is supposedly directed at Jagger's ex-girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton, whose relationship with Jagger at the time turned sour. It is noted for suggesting a negative treatment of women, comparing "yesterday's girl" to "yesterday's papers", as something that can be just thrown out. This is exacerbated by the fact that Shrimpton tried to commit suicide over the breakup. Below is a picture of Chrissie Shrimpton from that time:

Song #104 was "Come On," a Chuck Berry song that became the band's first chart hit. It reached #21 on the UK charts in a 14 week run that started in July 1963. Here's Chuck's version from 1961. Notice that Chuck says "some stupid jerk" and the Stones say "some stupid guy." They had to change the word jerk, other wise the strict BBC censors might have banned the record for promoting masturbation or something.

During the 6 June 2013 concert in Toronto, Canada, as part of the "50 & Counting Tour", Mick Jagger sang a few bars (with Charlie Watts drumming the beat) after mentioning the single being released exactly 50 years ago that day. It was the first time the song was heard in any capacity during a Rolling Stones concert since 1965.

Song #102 was "Heaven" from the "Tattoo You" album in 1981. Along with "Neighbors," this was one of two songs on Tattoo You recorded specifically for the album. The other tracks started as outtakes for other albums. Tattoo You was the last time The Rolling Stones scored a #1 on the US albums chart, after a full decade of albums that reached the summit.

Keith Richards doesn't play on this track; their bass player Bill Wyman played guitar and also synthesizer and bass. Mick Jagger also played guitar on the track, and the only other performer was Charlie Watts on drums. The vocals here peg this song as one of the most psychedelic the Stones ever did. The group had been gradually edging from pure blues to hard rock to psychedelic styles throughout the previous decade. Mick Jagger got quite creative with overdubbing and mixing on parts of the Tattoo You album.

The very concept of Heaven, an afterlife for humans presumed virtuous and pleasurable, seems built into the human psyche. It is a component of just about every major religion ever to take root in human history. However, this song seems to be talking only about sexual ecstasy.

Song #100 was "You Better Move On" from 1964. It was included on the "December's Children" album in 1965. It was first released in January 1964 on this British EP:

Image

The song was done originally by Arthur Alexander in 1961. The lyrics were inspired by Alexander's real life situation, in which his girlfriend and future wife already had a boyfriend. Alexander said of the situation "When I met her out of high school he was still hanging in there. His family was pretty well off. I didn't have no money but I knew she liked me. It was a small town and people would be talking. That's where I got the idea for the song. I didn't talk to him personally. I said it in song."

Song #98 is "Citadel" from the "Their Satanic Majesties Request" album in 1967. The chorus of the song refers to actress Candy Darling and her friend Taffy, who the Rolling Stones had previously met at the Hotel Albert in New York City. According to Darling:

We met them in the Hotel Albert. We were on the floor above them and we dangled a bunch of grapes down on a string outside their window. You see, the Citadel is New York and the song is a message to us – Taffy and me.

This album was the band's venture into psychedelic music. I never liked it myself, but lots of people do.

Song #97 is "Prodigal Son" from the "Beggars Banquet" album in 1968. The original song was written by Rev. Robert Wilkins although it is listed as a Mick Jagger/ Keith Richards song on the album. The 72 year old Rev. Wilkins recorded it in 1964 on his Reverend Robert Wilkins Memphis Gospel Singer album. The confusion was eventually straightened out and Wilkins got the money that was due him for writing the song. The original song as written by Wilkins was titled “That’s No Way To Get Along” back in the written back in the 1930’s before Wilkins gave up being a blues musician to join the church after witnessing a murder. It wasn’t by the way The Rolling Stones trying to screw someone over- a record company mistake. This was the first time since 1965 that The Rolling Stones had recorded a song written by someone else. Here's the Rev. Wilkins version:

Song #96 on the countdown is "Hang Fire" from 1981. The single got to #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. This song is a swipe at The Stones' home country of England. They imply that the people are lazy and the politicians incompetent. The Stones rarely performed in England because of the huge taxes that were levied on entertainers; it was much more profitable for them to live and work elsewhere.

A "hang fire" is a delay from when a trigger is pulled and the gun actually fires. The metaphor could apply to the lazy people who won't take action. It's also a great phrase to sing, which Mick Jagger does a few different ways throughout the song, sometimes stretching out "fire," and other times keeping it contained.

The Stones first recorded the track in 1978 at the Some Girls sessions. Lyrics were added and it was repackaged for Tattoo You. The original title was "Lazy Bitch," probably referring to British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

Song #95 is "Love Is Strong" from the "Voodoo Lounge" album in 1994. This was the first Stones single bass player Bill Wyman did not play on. Darryl Jones, who had played with Miles Davis and Sting, took over on bass when Wyman retired. R&B producer Teddy Riley cut four mixes of this song for a CD sampler.

This was the first single from Voodoo Lounge. The album won the first ever Grammy for Best Rock Album. It was the first album The Stones recorded without Bill Wyman, a founding member of the band. It was also the Stones' first release on Virgin Records.

Song #94 is "Confessin' The Blues" from 1964. It was included on the "12 X 5" album, which did not come out in the UK, but was released in Canada and the USA, and a few other places. It was first released in the UK on the EP shown below:

This song was a big hit in the black community in 1941, by Jay McShann, with Walter Brown on the vocal:

It's doubtful that the Stones were even aware of the McShann record when they recorded their version. They were channeling the 1958 version by Little Walter:
