I really hope the musical excellence category doesn't just turn into "important artists in genres that our voters don't like".

They waited to finally nominate Kool & The Gang until 2 of their main members died in recent times. Kool is still alive though.

Except for one guy, every original member of the band went to the same high school as my ex-wife, Lincoln High School in Jersey City. I officiated a few basketball games there, including one real intense battle between Lincoln and another school's girls teams. There was bad blood because the other school was a private school that had taken a couple of good players away from Lincoln's team.

The place was packed with fans and crazy that night.

Too late! That's probably why they changed the name of the category in the first place, from "sidemen" to "musical excellence", which is vague and doesn't really mean anything in particular.

If Ozzy Osbourne is inducted this year, he'll join Rod Stewart as the other artist who waited 18 years between his first and second induction.

Sampson's write-up is up. I think he underrates a few artists as he is wont to do, but overall it's what you expect. He doesn't really outright hate anyone.

https://digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best ... -2024.html

I disagree with him that DMB is "devoid of influence", though. There's quite a few popular acts from the last 25 years that were influenced strongly by DMB: John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, and the Zac Brown Band in particular. Some of these artists were also influenced by Phish, who don't have the record sales or radio hits that DMB had, but seem to be the more enduring act - there is something to be said about a musical group who sells out Madison Square Garden every New Year's Eve.

Foreigner, Frampton, and Kravitz are probably the weakest candidates on the ballot, but those are all well-known artists with big hits and an argument to be made for each of them, so they're not egregious picks. There are plenty of other enduring, well remembered and hitmaking artists of the 1970s AOR and classic rock era that are not in yet - Supertramp, Boston, Blue Oyster Cult, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, Grand Funk Railroad - and I'm not exactly sure what separates Foreigner from that pack. I would certainly prefer to see saxophonist Ian MacDonald to be inducted with King Crimson, who have never made the ballot either, over Foreigner. Maybe I just need to talk to a really big Foreigner fan to hear their whole case laid out.

Outside of not giving dmb any credit for influence and underrating Oasis I find Sampson's comments pretty agreeable this time around..

Popularity certainly isn't everything but Foreigner do have a ton of it, probably more than any of the artists you mentioned. I'd say their credentials are better than DMB's with popularity going to Foreigner and influence going to DMB but not by as much.

Dave Matthews Band's album sales are quite surprising. Album sales usually do not tell everything about the popularity of jam bands - a style whose most popular and acclaimed music is typically distributed for free by fans who recorded their concerts, particularly in its 1990s heydey - but DMB have sold 34.5 million albums in the United States. That puts them at #51 on this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_h ... ted_States

Foreigner is a couple spots ahead of them at #44 with 38 million copies.

Of course, Mariah Carey is the best selling nominee on that list, at #7 with 75 million copies in the US alone tied with Pink Floyd and AC/DC. She is the best selling female musical artist of all-time in the US. Taylor Swift still has a ways to catch up with her.

Mariah Carey is # 9 in total votes on Future Rock Legends. She's not in the Top 10 in Yes votes, but she's # 6 in No votes. She's the only 2024 nominee for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on any of the Top 10 lists on Future Rock Legends. If inducted this year, she will be the only artist Future Rock Legends voters got right this year. Her induction will make way for a new artist to join the Top 10 in voting on Future Rock Legends.
