What does he think Sinead O'Connor sounded like?!

Her two most popular songs outside of "Nothing Compares" are "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Mandinka", which are both alternative rock songs full of guitars. "Emperor's" was even a #1 hit on the Alternative chart in 1990.

Don't send this to Sampson, he might explode.

No sooner did Ryan mention the tediousness of people complaining about "non-rock" artists being on the ballot than we get link to another such person. His "non-rock artists" were O'Connor, Blige and A Tribe Called Quest. He didn't comment on Eric B & Rakim because he said he'd never heard of them (in which case he might have wanted to do a little quick research before posting a video on Youtube). He thought that maybe artists like this get nominated because liberals are always pushing for diversity, and that might also be the reason that Cher was on the ballot instead of Sonny & Cher - Sonny may have been excluded for being a Republican.

He said her "Prince cover" was the only time Sinead came anywhere near rock 'n' roll. I bet he hasn't heard anything from her 1st album.

I clicked on the video out of curiosity and I saw that the guy who made the video hearted a comment saying (I shit you not) that it's a disgrace that Billy Squier has never been nominated.

This is a good article from a decade ago about the Rock Hall that I think is right on the money with a lot of the stock complaints that always come up, which ones are valid and which ones are not (you can probably guess which ones are not).

https://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/ ... ll-of-fame

Specifically

Quote:
Gripe: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has the wrong name

Sure, they could have named it the Late Twentieth Century Popular Music Hall of Fame. But that wouldn't have been pithy. Must we endure the two billionth joke that it's not called the Disco Hall of Fame or the Rap Hall of Fame? And by the way, that other quip, "Hey, I have no problem if LL Cool J gets into the Rap Hall of Fame, just don't put him in the Rock Hall," isn't any more egalitarian; it's arguably worse. Separate-but-equal is a bad look.

The very first induction class to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1986, included the so-called Godfather of Soul (among many R&B-based acts), as well as a duo equally well known for its country songs. Rock and roll has never had clear boundaries — not at the start, not at your imagined peak, not now. Get over it.

Verdict: Not worth complaining about

Taupin, I don't think we want to see any more of these. They're not especially informative or insightful.

Yes, that was a strange comment. He didn't elaborate at all, or say why she wasn't rock, or say what she was instead. If anything, the 2 songs that you mentioned are more rock than "Nothing Compares". I suspect he knows little about her and just bluffed his way through it.

Yes, I think that we can do without any more youtube videos about the nominees. If someone on the internet has something worth saying about the nominees, one is more likely to find it in an article. Even there, one should be selective.

It seems like for every electric guitar oriented artist from the late '60s to early '80s that had a couple of hits, there's someone that thinks they should be in the Hall of Fame.

Sampson is still showing a 7 for A Tribe Called Quest on his RnR Hall of Fame page, but he did give them an 8 last year and the year before in his pages about the nominees for each of those years.
