This could go either way depending on my mood.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Bapa
Diamanda Galas - Birds of Death
I don't know how many times I'll be able to sit through it, but a song that makes me yell "WHAT?!" with a big smile on my face is so rare these days. Bapa was nice.

Dorothy Ashby - The Windmill of Your Mind
Hoahio - Less Than Lovers, More Than Friends
Hard. I actually bolded and unbolded both of these twice deciding which to vote for. Ultimately Windmill just has more going for it methinks.

Archers of Loaf - Scenic Pastures
Public Image Ltd. - Banging the Door
Don't like either. PiL is more interesting.

Was going to give the vote to Camp Lo on the grounds that it was shorter, but Les Malheurs got a bit better as it went on and i quite liked a bit towards the end.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Bapa
Diamanda Galas - Birds of Death

I liked Bapa rather a lot. Birds of Death prompted another Prince Charles moment for me I'm afraid.

Dorothy Ashby - The Windmill of Your Mind
Hoahio - Less Than Lovers, More Than Friends

Hoahio's song wasn't without merit, but it was overly long and repetitive and I don't think I'd listen to it left to my own devices. Ashby's had a killer bass performance and a great arrangement and I want some more info from whoever nominated it please! ie, more tracks etc etc.

Archers of Loaf - Scenic Pastures
Public Image Ltd. - Banging the Door

Stick to the bread adverts, John.

Don't really like either of these..."Les Malheurs" would probably be cool to dance to so I'll throw it a vote.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Bapa
Diamanda Galas - Birds of Death

I enjoyed "Bapa", but shit, "Birds of Death" was crazy and unlike anything I've ever heard.

Dorothy Ashby - The Windmill of Your Mind
Hoahio - Less Than Lovers, More Than Friends

So awesome

Archers of Loaf - Scenic Pastures
Public Image Ltd. - Banging the Door

Didn't like the Archers song, an d "Banging the Door" was a bit better.

Not a huge fan of either, I don't like that Lo beat very much, but the rapping's really good.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Bapa
Diamanda Galas - Birds of Death

Bapa was beautiful, Birds of Death was awful.

Dorothy Ashby - The Windmill of Your Mind
Hoahio - Less Than Lovers, More Than Friends

Windmill is gorgeous, it sounds... modern. Less Than Lovers is bland and repetitive. Avant-pop? What a silly genre name, almost as silly as folk-tronic. The two styles are exact opposites and this song is in not pop in any universe I live in.

Archers of Loaf - Scenic Pastures
Public Image Ltd. - Banging the Door

Scenic Pastures is a nice catchy pop-punk song. Banging the Door is just bad. I like PI ltd. but this is an awful choice.

Bapa was a convincingly heartfelt performance. Birds of Death was certainly a unique style, and I'm glad I heard it, but I don't think there's much growing room. Didn't quite have any powerful 'release' moment.

Nick, I nominated the Dorothy Ashby track, but unfortunately, I know nothing else about her, except that she has some acclaimed albums according to Allmusic. I'll do some digging and get back to you.

well, aren't you the dark horse? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... Id=6488979 Ms Ashby, well-known in her time, if for no other reason than she brought the harp to jazz. the album you seek is "afro harping", i suspect. the NPR piece is about "In A Minor Groove"

a tangent, but somewhat Ashby/Detroit 50s jazz related

i hope y'all don't take it the wrong way, but nominating most hip-hop is almost like placing a special olympics athlete into a real olympics event... "les mahleurs" was a rather pleasant surprise
(btw i checked out their other stuff on youtube and i'm liking a couple tracks even more than this)

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu - Bapa
Diamanda Galas - Birds of Death

Dorothy Ashby - The Windmill of Your Mind
Hoahio - Less Than Lovers, More Than Friends
not an easy choice... i like funky drumming as much as anyone (just wait for my bill withers nom), but i don't like this marriage of harp and drumming at all.

Archers of Loaf - Scenic Pastures
Public Image Ltd. - Banging the Door
i don't know if this has been mentioned already, but the drumming on "banging the door" sounds like inspiration for a u2 hit
that said, my ears can't take much of either :ugh:

Yusef Lateef. Donny Hathaway bangs on about him.

You got the wrong link for the Piazzolla somehow. http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Conci ... 8gso?src=5 is the right one.

Miles Davis - Black Satin
American Football - Never Meant

If I tried to rank my favorite Miles Davis albums, I couldn't do it, at least not yet. There are too many I love on a roughly equal level, and too many I just don't know well enough yet. However, I know that On the Corner would be up near the top. It's a gritty, funky, tribal masterpiece. Black Satin is one of its best tracks, too, with great flutes playing around a killer groove. It works a lot better in context, but even in isolation, it's a fantastic song, and easily one of the best of the tournament so far. The American Football song is pleasant, but they're not a band that really does all that much for me. The guitar work is really nice, but the vocals less so. Easy choice here.

Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto
Elton John - Indian Sunset

This Astor Piazzolla piece is fantastic and exactly the sort of music I hoped to discover through this tournament. Major props to whoever recommended it. Simply gorgeous and touching. The Elton John song is fine, if nondescript, but next to such an arresting piece, it can't hold up.

Can – Tape Kebab
Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels)

Tape Kebab is probably my favorite Can song not on any of their major albums (Monster Movie and then the big three). It's from one of their three appearances on John Peel's Radio show, this one post-Damo. Jaki and Holger Czukay lay down a great groove, while Schmidt and Karoli provide synths and guitars in the foreground, respectively. This is one of the most Schmidt-dominant Can songs, and it works really well. Matt Peoples was fine, good even, but no match.

Danzig – Godless
Whiteroom - Papillons

Dig the drumming on Godless. The rest of it isn't offering all that much to me. This is a decent metal song overall, I guess, but that means it does nothing for me. Vocals are really annoying me. The Whiteroom song is hitting the spot much better. It's not the sort of music I'd actively seek out to listen to, but I'm digging this song more than enough to throw it a vote for this round (against Tape Kebab next round, assuming it advances, not so much).

Miles Davis - Black Satin
American Football - Never Meant
"black satin" sounds like a collage of all music miles had in his head at the time probably... the second track is pleasant enough but not special or interesting in any way to these ears, so miles wins by default

Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto
Elton John - Indian Sunset
confession: i don't like tango. i do have immense respect for piazzola, though, and probably would have been a huge fan of him had i liked the form he's working in a little more... the less of that march feel there is, the more i like it, though, regarding both this piece and all his other compositions.
i have to question the obscurity of "indian sunset", a relatively well-known track from arguably the biggest album from arguably the biggest pop artist of the 70s, though that's not the reason i'm voting against it. (btw saw "where to now st peter?" as a related link on youtube... i reckon it is a much better song and probably a bit more obscure, well, relatively speaking)

Can – Tape Kebab
Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels)

Danzig – Godless
Whiteroom - Papillons
pipa!! there's actually a lot to like about "papillon"

Miles Davis - Black Satin
American Football - Never Meant

The one that has melodies and important stuff like that.

Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto
Elton John - Indian Sunset

I didn't particularly like either. Indian Sunset could have taken it but it was just too cheesy in places.

Can – Tape Kebab
Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels)

This is a really difficult one. The guitar playing in Tape Kebab is great even if it does meander in places. Matt Peoples is a really nice, short and sweet folk piece. Fuck, I can't decide.

Danzig – Godless
Whiteroom - Papillons

No contest here. Danzig just isn't very good.
