Re: Greatest Male Rock Vocalists (Revision Version)

This sort of makes the list worse, then. In terms of pure skill, Elvis would be around 30.
I'm not too sure Elvis should be that high, either. But, to me -- and apparently to others here -- Aretha has the clearest claim to #1.

If influence/impact are afterthoughts, Elvis shouldn't be in the ...

Re: Greatest Alt Country Music Songs (Revision Version)

While there is some Drive By Truckers, a total lack of Jason Isbell in any of the Country/Americana lists seems a gross oversight.

Cover Me Up deserves a top 100 spot here, i'd say.

Re: Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)

Agree on continuing, but what a maintenance job that will be.

I think Ten is a bit low - OK Computer should probably be over Ten, also. Nevermind, while astoundingly popular in the 90s probably isn't quite that high (but also, this is a weak argument lmao).

Born to Die and 21 definitely need to ...

Re: Small topics

Man, some of these DDD lists are atrocious. Looks like Jestercide from the old forum wrote them all.

Seriously though, the AM lists are critics' aggregates. I'm not saying that makes them unbiased but there's no individual person who has written them.

It should be clear that didn't claim any ...

Re: Greatest Male Rock Vocalists (Revision Version)

I think part of the disconnect here is that you're using a very different set of measures than the ones the list was built on. The criteria weren't sales figures, cultural ubiquity, or how many casual listeners today can hum along to the hits. The "greatest rock vocalists" lists specifically note ...

Re: Greatest Male Rock Vocalists (Revision Version)

Hmm - well, there is absolutely nothing that could support the idea that Aretha should be above Freddie. If it was 'argued to death', I can only surmise it was argued in bad faith because there is no good argument. I do not expect to change the minds of those who have come to a conclusion, adverse ...

Clearly more influential than Freddie and probably more skilled and acclaimed than Elvis.
Quite obviously not, though, for either?? She is much more skilled than Elvis, i'll give you that.

Re: Greatest Male Rock Vocalists (Revision Version)

Yikes. I think some of that's sort of indefensible. I'd say something more like this is reasonable:

1. Freddie Mercury
2. Elvis Presley
3. Aretha Franklin
4. Clyde McPhatter
5. Sam Cooke
6. Roy Orbison
7. Jackie Wilson
8. Robert Plant
9. Whitney Houston
10. Michael Jackson
11. Little Richard
12 ...

Re: Greatest Rock Lyrical Performances (Revision Version)

I think there's not much of a lack. Definitely a lack, but 'lyrics' are thought of quite differently between rap and rock (in the colloquial distinction). We aren't really comparing apples with apples.

That said: More Dylan, more Oberst, more Vedder. more del Rey.

Re: Greatest Rock Lyricists (Revision Version)

IMO there's a decent amount wrong this list - but, in contrast, it is by far the best list I've ever seen for the topic. Definitely a little recency bias going on, and a handful that seem kind of just thrown in their positions among the top 50, but great overall! Good stuff.

Re: Best Performances by Drummer (Revision Version)

Funnily enough, the opening pattern to Ticks and Leeches is the easiest part to learn. Again, i think there's recency bias. If we didn't have that drumcam version of Pnuema, and specifically, all the reaction videos to it, i seriously doubt we'd be having this conversation. Those creators are ...

Re: Greatest Television Shows of All Time

Strange lists imo. For instance. The Simpsons heyday was clearly the 90s, and Cheers biggest moment was the early 90s (finale was the most-watched episode of hte 90s afaik.

Respectable lists, overall though.
