Re: 100 Greatest Billy Joel Songs

I agree with adding "All for Leyna". Either "Where's the Orchestra" or "Mexican Connection" could be dropped to make room for it. I also agree with moving up "Vienna", maybe into the top 20, but definitely no lower than #26. I say that position because there's a natural break there. I think that ...

Re: 600 Greatest Rock Songs Of All Time (Revision Version)

We have replaced "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean" by Ruth Brown at #589 with "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd.

Re: 250 Greatest Movies of the 1940s (Revision Version)

It seems most sources list it as 1950, but I see now that a couple do list it as 1949. As far as I know, we don't have any definitive way to determine which is right.

Re: 250 Greatest Movies of the 1940s (Revision Version)

Are you sure about D.O.A. being from 1949? Wikipedia and TSPDT say that it's a 1950 release.

Re: Greatest Film Noir Movies (Revision Version)

Having done some research into proto-noir films, I currently think it's OK to keep the 6 pre-1940 films on the list, partly because I think that if there are going to be pre-1940 films on the list, the ones on the list are good choices, and because there are just 6 out of 100. However, I do think ...

Re: Greatest Film Noir Movies (Revision Version)

TSPDT defines noir rather broadly. I've never seen Citizen Kane, Casablanca, or Rear Window classified as noir anywhere else, although Citizen Kane has been credited with influencing certain aspects of noir. On your above list, of the ones that you put in brackets, the only one that I think ...

Re: Greatest Film Noir Movies (Revision Version)

Thanks Lew.

Since I'm a co-editor, I'll want to look the list over some more for possible changes. Right now I'll just say that I think the top 5 is very solid. I'd probably flip The Big Sleep with Sunset Boulevard. No biggie though, they're both huge.

One think I noticed was that you didn't ...

Re: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Yes, I think it's pointless to include people who aren't even eligible yet on these lists. Obviously there are artists who aren't eligible yet who should be inducted when they're eligible. And if they're going to include artists that aren't eligible yet, why didn't they include Beyonce, Taylor Swift ...

Re: Greatest Film Noir Movies (Revision Version)

I recommend adding the following 10 films to this list, roughly in this order:

They Live by Night (1948, Nicholas Ray) (Cathy O'Donnell, Farley Granger, Howard da Silva)
The Hitch-Hiker (1953, Ida Lupino) (Edmond O'Brien, Frank Lovejoy, William Talman)
Odd Man Out (1947, Carol Reed) (James Mason ...

Re: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

From that list, I'll second Bjork and PJ Harvey. Courtney Love shouldn't be on the list as a solo artist. Her band Hole would be a far better choice, though I'd say even they fall short. I'd take Mariah Carey, TLC, The Pointer Sisters, and probably even Fiona Apple over most of what's on that list.

Re: Greatest Sci-Fi Movies (Revision Version)

I started becoming interested in old movies about 2 months ago, and have started researching them to help me prioritize which movies to see. That research is mostly looking into what others consider great movies, that is, looking at lists on the internet. Based on that, I would say that Eternal ...

Re: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

OK, thanks Ryan. I remember that they were inducting more recent artists under what they used to call Early Influence, but forgot that they changed the name of it. It makes sense that they did change the name, since the new name is a better fit for artists like Kraftwerk and Salt-N-Pepa than the old ...

Re: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I'm glad of course that Outkast made it, but I think the minimal expectation for a passing grade for the voting body would have been inducting both Outkast and Mariah. And then they didn't induct JD/NO or Oasis either. Outkast may have been the Hall's biggest snub of eligible post-1955 artists ...

I think 600 songs is long enough. The decade lists have additional songs that didn't make the all-time list.
