Re: Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)

Checked the archive and there's been talk from Neg Creep and Brian about Rubber Soul being ahead of Revolver with Brian saying that Rubber Soul narrowly beats Revolver in everything (granted, critical acclaim was not a part of criteria just peer acclaim aka musical impact).

Yes, comparing the ...

Re: Greatest Rock Lyricists (Revision Version)

I wouldn't mind a small elevation for Richard Hell, like about where Sting and Don Henley are.

Re: Greatest Rock Lyricists (Revision Version)

Wherever you guys want to put MF Doom and Kendrick is OK with me.

Richard Hell would be one of the least popular artists in the top 100, if not the least popular. That doesn't necessarily mean that #80 is too high for him, I just wanted that to be kept in mind.

Looking at that part of the list, I ...

Agreed, and he included who I think are the 4 most deserving artists on his ballot, and his other 3 are all worthy of consideration.

Re: 600 Greatest Rock Songs Of All Time (Revision Version)

Good list. The only thing that struck me is that I don't see "Highway to Hell" as top 120 of all time. The 1st song that occurred to me as one that could replace it is "Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers, but then I saw that you mentioned "California Dreamin'", and that could replace it too.

That's a very good ballot by Mark Kemp. If only everyone voted that well.

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

His reputation as a public figure is obviously much, much, more negative than the three below him but I don't think his music's reputation has actually been affected. If anything, as the new AM update suggests, his albums have actually continued to grow in acclaim over the years (All of his ...

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

I'd say Abba should be considered as well, maybe Brian Eno, though, admittedly a lot of his greatest work is in the ambient genre.

Looking over my 101-200 list and seeing this post, it occurred to me that it was probably inconsistent for me to have included The Carpenters in the top 200 but ...

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

They started out as Jerry Butler & the Impressions, had a big song in "For Our Precious Love", and then Butler left. Mayfield was pretty dominant from then until he left in 1970. After that, they had a few charting singles, but only one real pop hit. They did have a few R&B hits after that.

Re: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I don't think there's any case at all for Humble Pie being in the Hall. There must be over 100 eligible artists not yet inducted that are more deserving than Humble Pie, including all 17 artists on this year's ballot.

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

Just saying but I'd say I prefer Impressions and Curtis Mayfield solo getting separate placements as Impressions were not always dominated by Mayfield the way say Miracles were by Smokey Robinson or Crickets by Holly.

I felt that was a tough call when I had the list. I think that the main ...

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

I was actually on the fence about how much credit Bee Gees deserved for popularizing disco since it was already very popular before the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. I could see them next to Donna Summer.

Disco was popular before that, but I see Saturday Night Fever as bringing disco to its ...

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

I think Domino's win in popularity is probably bigger than Richard's in acclaim while influence is pretty close, and if we weight popularity a bit more than acclaim I definitely lean towards Domino being ahead.

I also think Prince does slightly better in all of the criteria than Gaye so if we ...

Re: Greatest Rock Artists Of All Time (Revision Version)

Brian, would you suggest us keeping Fats over Hendrix and/or Gaye? Guess I can see arguments for both sides here.

With the new criteria, I can see Hendrix ahead of Domino now. Influence counts for more and cultural impact for less both of which I think help Hendrix, since I think Hendrix beats ...
