I really can't see Avatar in the top 10. The fact that it would be ranked above all but 1 anime alone is suspect.

It's pretty much universally acclaimed and has huge popularity as well, not as much influence as most top tier anime, admittedly, but I think it makes up for it in other ways.

Man, how do you think Daria and Animaniacs compare?

Animaniacs is a bit more acclaimed while Daria seems a bit more popular though I'm less sure about that, I'll move Animaniacs up a bit.

More acclaimed and popular than One Piece? Evangelion? Gundam? The influence in shows like these alone could be enough to overshadow ATLA on their own. That's not even mentioning Astro Boy or Doraemon (admittedly a show with limited reach outside Japan).

I'd say it's more popular than Evangelion and Gundam (the numbers it did when it was released on Netflix speak to that), and probably more acclaimed as well. One Piece, I'll give you, is at least at Avatar's level of popularity, but it seems like Avatar is more acclaimed (based on TreasureTV, and online rating sites).

I can only speak anecdotally, but here in Spain I rarely see Avatar mentioned, while One Piece is very popular (admittedly mostly within anime fans, but still I see way more of them compared to people who have watched Avatar). And everybody in my generation has watched Doraemon countless times, as it was one of the cartoons on rotation when we were kids!

And what are you basing that on? The popularity of the Gundam franchise should speak for itself, and its influence and status within the industry is far above Avatar's. I don't how we are meant to gauge popularity between these shows, being that to use websites like IMDB is going to have a Western-centric skew, but Evangelion is a gigantic franchise unto itself and there have been reams of text written about its importance in Japanese animation (being #1 on our old anime list wasn't some ass-pull idea). Treasure TV also has it just below Avatar and that's with the Western skew.

The international popularity of One Piece blows them all away though, which probably shouldn't be surprising for a show that has run continuously for over 25 years. It has essentially matched DragonBall as the most loved anime worldwide, and its cultural influence has found its way into the center of major global events. IMDB also has it at 9/10 with 300k votes, not that much below Avatar fwiw.
