Avatar vs Evangelion
Initial Acclaim: Tie,
Lasting Critical Acclaim: Tie
Lasting Audience Acclaim: Tie
Initial Popularity: Genuinely no way to compare ratings in the US vs Japan, but given how much of a sensation NGE was almost immediately I feel safe putting them on an even plane.
Lasting Popularity: Avatar's Netflix ratings speak very strongly, as does its recent expansions, but by that same token Evangelion is still huge part of pop culture in Japan and has had its own share of spin-offs and tie-ins on a much greater scale.
Influence: Evangelion, huge.
Very tight, but decidedly in Evangelion's favor. Not much different than currently placed.
Avatar vs One Piece:
Initial Acclaim: Avatar
Lasting Critical Acclaim: Avatar, easily
Lasting Audience Acclaim: Close, slight edge to One Piece (this show has only gotten stronger internationally over time)
Initial Popularity: It is very hard to compare a three-season show to 25+ that are still ongoing, because if you go season-by-season or on average, OP is going to absolutely run away with this. Proportionate to their runs though, Avatar does do very well in the ratings department.
Lasting Popularity: One Piece, easily. Overlaps a lot with the previous category, but this show's popularity has only grown with time, has a strange kind of staying power as a gateway anime.
Influence: As a show, I don't know that One Piece has a lot to say for itself, and most of it would originate with the manga anyway. Win for Avatar, I think.
That's 3 vs 3. Could see Avatar winning this one, but One Piece's significance really seems to balance more in its favor.
Avatar vs Mobile Suit Gundam
Initial Acclaim: Tie, maybe an edge to Avatar
Lasting Critical Acclaim: Avatar
Lasting Audience Acclaim: Avatar
Initial Popularity: Avatar (initial TV run for Gundam was not successful)
Lasting Popularity: The Gundam series is much bigger than Avatar, but it has grown far beyond the original show which makes this hard to gauge. I want to give this to Avatar
Influence: Gundam.
Actually a pretty easy win for Avatar.
Evangelion > Avatar = One Piece > Gundam.
Have no idea how you compare Astro Boy since I have no way of finding reviews or ratings info from 1963, but you have a show with huge cultural cache in Japan that managed to break through the mainstream in the US, has been remade several times including a major US film starring Nicholas Cage, and is widely considered to be the first true "anime."
Re: 100 Greatest Cartoons
I still lean towards Avatar winning acclaim and popularity but it's fair to argue that NGE's win in influence takes the matchup considering it's cultural impact in Japan. I'll move it up on my TV shows list
