600 Greatest Rock Songs Of All Time (Revision Version)

Post by Lew »

Criteria: These Greatest Rock Songs of all time were chosen and ranked based upon their initial and lasting popularity, influence, and acclaim. Also considered is the song's overall impact on the history of the rock genre. An effort was made to cover all styles of rock from the various eras of the genre, from the late 1940s through the early 2020s. An effort was also made to cover as many different important artists as possible without compromising the integrity of the rankings. When two or more versions of a song were fairly equal in importance, the versions were listed together, in order of the "greatness" of each version, based on the criteria.

Would it be too early to add Not Like Us?

That depends. Kendrick has already two songs on the list. Do we put it instead of Humble, or which song do you see it beating? Also, are we sure on Not Like Us being the greatest 2020s song?

Considering he's one of the greatest artists of the century I don't think 3 songs is too much.

I also think that it's clearly the most impactful song of the decade, and one of the most acclaimed and popular.

Maybe it's time to expand to top 1000?

I think 600 songs is long enough. The decade lists have additional songs that didn't make the all-time list.

We have replaced "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean" by Ruth Brown at #589 with "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd.

Son of a Preacher Man should probably be on the list. Top 300 on AcclaimedMusic, good initial popularity and strong lasting popularity (top 30 for the 1960s in terms of Spotify streams).

Some suggestions I have

btw this is the new AcclaimedMusic update I'm referring to https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

- Stand by Me is one of the most popular songs of the 1960s + it's #57 on AcclaimedMusic. I'm not sure Proud Mary or Maggie May clearly beat it in any of the criteria for example. Same deal with I Want You Back and Sittin On the Dock of the Bay (which is even more acclaimed).

- Be My Baby is in the upper echelon when it comes to the most acclaimed rock songs, along with probably being Phil Spector's most influential recording so I'd say it's among the most influential rock songs as well, at least in terms of production. In terms of popularity, it was a big hit and has consistently remained a staple to this day, garnering over 3 million plays on the radio and over 800 million plays on Spotify. I could even see it in the top 20-30.

- Paint It, Black is #71 on the new AcclaimedMusic update, was a #1 hit and it has over 1.6 billion streams on Spotify. I'd say it should be top 100 or somewhere close to it.

- Ain't No Mountain High Enough is among the most lastingly popular songs of the 1960s (it's 7x platinum according to the RIAA) and is top 600 on AcclaimedMusic. I'd say it should be Marvin's fifth highest ranked song.

- Paranoid is top 150 on AcclaimedMusic, huge influence with very strong lasting popularity as well, initial popularity is admittedly its weak spot, but it still peaked at #4 in the UK and charted in the US as well. Something like London Calling or Anarchy in the UK only beats it in acclaim.

- Bohemian Rhapsody is now #15 on AcclaimedMusic, is possibly the most lastingly popular song of the 1970s, diamond certified by the RIAA and peaked in the top 40 on 3 separate occasions. I'd say it's more popular than Born to Run with similar acclaim. It seems very comparable with Imagine in both acclaim and popularity, neither has huge influence.

- Dancing Queen is probably among the top 10 most acclaimed and popular songs of the 1970s so it should definitely be in the top 50, imo. I think Brian mentioned moving it up on the old forum as well.

- Dreams is top 200 on AcclaimedMusic, a #1 hit and the biggest song off one of the biggest albums of all time. Also in the top 100 most streamed songs of all time on Spotify, being one of only 3 songs from the 1970s to do that.

- Purple Rain is top 60 on AcclaimedMusic, peaked at #2 + being off one of the most popular albums of the 1980s. It also seems to be Prince's most lastingly popular song, especially after its use in Stranger Things.

- Take On Me is #315 on AcclaimedMusic while being one of the most popular songs of the 1980s. It should be in the top 300 for sure, probably in the top 250 since its credentials seem very similar to Livin On a Prayer's. Everybody Wants to Rule the World is similar, though a bit less acclaimed and popular, it should probably be in the top 400-450

- I Wanna Dance with Somebody is top 350 on AcclaimedMusic, #1 in a dozen or so countries, 8x platinum, a dancefloor staple for decades + its been cited as a gay anthem. I'd suggest a straight swap with How Will I Know?

- Since a c̵o̵v̵e̵r̵ remake of the song hit #1 a few years ago, I think Fast Car could move up a bit (the various versions of the song have over 3 billion streams on Spotify).

- Like a Prayer is top 50 on AcclaimedMusic, was a huge hit during its time and remains very popular to this day.

- Juicy was Biggie's breakthrough single, and one of the most popular and acclaimed hip hop songs of the 1990s. I'd say it should be top 300 for sure.

- Believe has strong initial and lasting popularity, solid acclaim, and it's up there with the most influential song of the 1990s due to popularizing auto-tune. I'd say it should be somewhere in the top 600 for sure.

- ...Baby One More Time is top 300 on AcclaimedMusic, one of the more initially and lastingly popular songs of the 1990s + cited as influential on late 1990s-early 2000s pop music

- Yellow is top 600 on AcclaimedMusic while being one of the most popular songs of the 2000s with over 3.5 billion streams on Spotify, so I'd say it should be somewhere on the list.

- Gold Digger is far more popular than Jesus Walks while Jesus Walks' win in influence and arguable win in acclaim is much smaller. I'd suggest a straight swap between them.

- Mr. Brightside is top 150 on AcclaimedMusic, had strong initial popularity and even stronger lasting popularity, having notably been on the UK charts for 488 weeks (and counting). I'd say it should be in the top 300 at least.

- Royals is top 150 on AcclaimedMusic, was a #1 hit in tons of countries and is widely credited with popularizing alt-pop music. I'd say it should be the 2nd highest ranked 2010s song for sure, probably near the top 300.

- Alright is top 50 on AcclaimedMusic + it was an anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement so I'd say it should be top 400 at least.

- We Found Love is top 500 on AcclaimedMusic while being one of the biggest songs of the 2010s. I'd say it should be somewhere on the list for sure.

There's a lot there to chew on, so for now I'll comment on 2 things, and return to others later.

I'm not sure about "Paranoid" ahead of London Calling", but it probably should be ahead of "Anarchy". On specific criteria, I might give "Anarchy" the edge over "Paranoid" in influence, even though Sabbath is more influential than the Pistols, because almost all of the Pistols influence can be credited to "Anarchy", while I think "Paranoid" just helped to popularize what Sabbath had already done, so much of Sabbath's influence, I'd even say most, I'd credit to their first album.

A little over 3 years ago, I proposed that "Royals" be raised to #406, but Brett was opposed to it because he said he didn't hear it much on the radio anymore. But I'm willing to try again to see if he might now be willing to give it some kind of boost. I'll wait to ask until I've looked at a few more of these suggestions.

I think Royals' credentials in acclaim, influence and initial popularity should be enough to elevate its place, even though it's lasting popularity isn't quite as strong.

I'm wondering how much credence should be given to the new acclaimedmusic update, with it calling itself a limited update, which may suggest a lack of rigor or thoroughness. "Proud Mary" and "Maggie May" dropping as much as they did also makes me wonder, because it would seem that songs as old as those two shouldn't be dropping that much at this late date. Do you know if they plan to revise their main site list to match that spreadsheet?

There won't be any further updates to the main site due to health issues on Henrik's part. The new update is considered a "limited" update because a) there was only a limited number of hand-selected sources added and b) it only updates the ranks of albums/songs that already had entries on the main site (which means, for example, that it still excludes everything from 2020 on).
