Criteria: These make-up artists were ranked according to their influence on use of make-up in films, the acclaim they received for their make-up artistry, and, to a lesser degree, the greatness (influence, acclaim, popularity) of the films they provided make-up for.

Disclaimer: This list is strongly influenced by the Western canon of films. This means that in the broader scope of a global cinema certain regions may be underrepresented, among them Russia, India, China, Africa and Latin America

I was thinking he deserved a lot of credit for the apes in 2001, though I guess that was already pretty well reflected in his placement.

Fun fact - I met someone a few years ago who had his makeup done by Greg Cannom for a play (before he got famous)

My thinking was that Freeborn's most enduring legacy might as well be the creation of Yoda which is, broad as the term "make-up artist" may be, somewhat peripheral to what the list is about, changing the looks of actors for sake of their roles.

I think that sits somewhere in the Vinn diagram of make-up, costume, and special effects.
