Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)

Re: Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)
I'd have Rumours a bit higher as well, more popular and acclaimed than the 4 albums above it.
I'd have also have Wish You Were Here a bit higher, probably top 200 all time in both acclaim and popularity.
I'd have Bad up behind 21 and 1989.
We probably underrated Like a Virgin a bit, it seems comparable to Control and Run-D.M.C., for example. I'd also add her debut since it scores well in both popularity and acclaim
I'd even have Back to Black higher. Among both the most acclaimed and popular 2000s albums while also being fairly influential as well. I'd even have it in the top 70.
Re: Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)
Yes, comparing the two by recent critical acclaim rather than musical impact does change things, as Revolver seems to win the former somewhat easily, while I think Rubber Soul narrowly wins musical impact, though both do very well in musical impact.Tim wrote: Mon Mar 16, 2026 9:17 am Checked the archive and there's been talk from Neg Creep and Brian about Rubber Soul being ahead of Revolver with Brian saying that Rubber Soul narrowly beats Revolver in everything (granted, critical acclaim was not a part of criteria just peer acclaim aka musical impact).
For popularity, looking only at the US for the time being, both albums were #1 for 6 weeks. Rubber Soul was in the top 40 for 39 weeks and on the charts for 59 weeks. Revolver was in the top 40 for 24 weeks and on the charts for 77 weeks. I'd say Rubber Soul's advantage in the top 40 slightly outweighs Revolver's advantage on the whole chart. Rubber Soul is 6x platinum and Revolver is 5x platinum. Revolver's certification was updated a little more recently, but neither has been updated in 25 years. So I'd say their US certifications aren't very helpful in choosing one over the other, but Rubber Soul appears to have a slight advantage there.
For influence, Rubber Soul influenced Pet Sounds and Aftermath, but I'd be hard-pressed to name a major album that followed from Revolver. Speaking more generally, Rubber Soul was an album made as an album, not the first time that had happened, but helped popularize it. Revolver wasn't the first psychedelia, but again, it helped popularize it, and probably took it to new places. I think narrow win to Rubber Soul here.
Re: Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)
I also think the more recent album additions are being overrated. An album like Freak Out is leagues more influential than all of them while also being more acclaimed, and I see it has been kicked out.

Aftermath seems like a pretty big omission since it's top 250 on acclaimedmusic while also doing well in popularity and influence.
Also, Tim, thoughts on this?

I also think Dookie seems fairly comparable to Van Halen in all the criteria so I'd have them back to back.
In terms of 90s rap, I think Enter the Wu-Tang > The Low End Theory for sure.
I'd also have Straight Outta Compton a bit higher.

Wouldn't True Blue be a better pick though, for another Madonna album? Ranked #69 to debut's #120 on Brett's 1980s list, her biggest seller along with Like a Virgin, cited as her artistic (not commercial though) breakthrough.Tim wrote: Tue Mar 17, 2026 5:29 pm Well, I am zooming in on the top 100 for now, Madonna's debut can be included in the top 300.
Re: Greatest Rock Albums of All Time (Revision Version)
Edit: and I wouldn't consider Amazing Grace a rock album.
