Classical Musicians

Post by DDD »

What we don't have in the Classical Music section are classical musicians from the recording era.
Such as "Ten Greatest ...":
Violinists
Cellists
Pianists
Organists
Flutists
Harpists
Clarinetists
Bassoonists
Trumpeters
etc.

There was a list of 30 conductors and one of 40 pianists in the old forum that I saved. I'll make a thread for those. There should also be a list of violinists. I'll work on that. Some of the other instruments mentioned above will be harder to make lists for that I'll really feel confident about, but for most I should at least be able to come up with 10 names that featured on acclaimed recordings.

Thanks, Fido. I'll add that to the thread I created for musicians. Also, I just finished a violinists list which I'll also add to that thread. I'll probably do a cellists list next.

Off topic, Brian, wonder if the list for art songs/lieds would be doable for you?

Tim, I'll look into whether or not that's doable. The thing about lieder is that to me, cycles of lieder such as Schubert's Die schone Mullerin and Winterreise and Schumann's Dichterliebe seem to be celebrated more than individual lieder, and there aren't enough big cycles of lieder to put together a list of those of any great length. But I'll see what I can do.

I've determined that a list for art songs and one for art song cycles/collections are doable, and I've been working on them the last few days. For now, I think I'll limit it to songs performed by a vocalist and pianist, since that's how the lion's share of art songs are performed, and adding additional instruments really seems to change the nature of the performance. I might perhaps make a small sublist of a different kind of cycle/collection, such as as one vocalist with orchestra.

I don't expect that they will be very widely viewed lists, so it's good to hear that someone is looking forward to them.
