I'd say Redding only loses influence against the Byrds. Not sure on cultural impact but he also seems a bigger cultural figure.

That could be, but I think that popularity is close, and that the Byrds beat Redding in influence by more than he beats them in acclaim. I see this as a close match-up that could go either way.
