It's also, clearly, their most viewed song on YouTube, and (for whatever it's worth) their most Shazamed song as well, indicating it gets played in public quite a bit as well. According to this list (which seems fairly comprehensive), Paint It, Black is the band's best selling song as well.

This would all seem to clearly point to Paint It, Black being their most popular song these days.

I never considered the Shazam angle, but that's pretty useful info.

Why the high placement for I'm on Fire?

How is I'm On Fire's placement high? Top 10 single, certified 2x platinum by the RIAA, one of his more acclaimed songs, and one of his most streamed songs (both on Spotify and Youtube). Also, one of his most shazamed songs if you consider that relevant.
According to this it's one of his best selling songs as well:

I could maybe see it below Streets of Philadelphia but not any lower than that.

Just curious, as it's not on the current list. It's also his most covered song, I actually heard two other versions (by White Buffalo and Cassandra Violet) before I heard the original.

I can't see why George Michael and Wham are combined. Those are incontrovertibly two separate musical entities.

Not sure about it, think it's fair to say they were dominated by George Michael creatively with him being a chief songwriter of the duo.

You can apply that logic to tons of acts, that doesn't make them interchangeable. Would you consider Brian Eno and Roxy Music to be indivisible? How about Paul Simon and S&G? Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground?
