Did we want to tackle this year by year, or just shuffle around the main list? Something I've noticed is MP has some of his films from the top 500 (Birdman, Grand Budapest, Django Unchained) behind films that are not on the list/contradict the current order. So I'm wondering if we made some of these changes how they impact the overall top 500 list.

(PS - I am absolutely shocked you have Tree of Life as #2 on your 2011, lol)

I figured I could compromise a little bit with The Tree of Life.

I'll say, I do think Portrait of a Lady On Fire should probably be above it
Initial Acclaim: Close
Lasting Critical Acclaim: Close
Lasting Audience Acclaim: Portrait of a Lady On Fire easily
Initial Popularity: The Tree of Life
Lasting Popularity: Portrait of a Lady On Fire
Influence: I don't think either has a significant amount

For Amour vs Django Unchained
I'd say
Initial Acclaim: Amour close
Lasting Critical Acclaim: Amour fairly easily
Lasting Audience Acclaim: Django Unchained
Initial Popularity: Django Unchained easily
Lasting Popularity: Django Unchained easily

For 2014 ranks #2-7, I'd say
Initial Acclaim: The Grand Budapest Hotel/Birdman > Whiplash > Gone Girl > Guardians of the Galaxy > Interstellar
Lasting Critical Acclaim: The Grand Budapest Hotel > Whiplash > Birdman/Interstellar/Gone Girl >>> Guardians of the Galaxy
Lasting Audience Acclaim: Whiplash > Interstellar > The Grand Budapest Hotel > Gone Girl > Guardians of the Galaxy > Birdman
Initial Popularity: Guardians of the Galaxy > Interstellar >> Gone Girl >> The Grand Budapest Hotel > Birdman > Whiplash
Lasting Popularity: Interstellar > Guardians of the Galaxy > Gone Girl/Whiplash > The Grand Budapest Hotel >> Birdman

Overall Acclaim: The Grand Budapest Hotel > Whiplash > Birdman > Gone Girl > Interstellar >> Guardians of the Galaxy
Overall Popularity: Interstellar/Guardians of the Galaxy >> Gone Girl > The Grand Budapest Hotel > Whiplash > Birdman
Influence: I don't think any of these have a ton but I guess Birdman, Whiplash and GotG could be seen as steps forward for Inarritu, Chazelle and Pratt respectively.

I feel like during our assemblage of the Top 500 we established that Birdman is more influential than the films currently behind it, and that Amour is more influential than Django - so I don't think those 2 need to move down.

A couple of thoughts after scanning Man's lists:

2010: Uncle Boonmee could probably be moved down a bit due to a low IMDB score, HTTYD could maybe be a spot or two higher

2011: I'd like to see Midnight in Paris above Descendents

2012: I'd agree with moving Skyfall up to #4

2013: I'd move up Frozen to #5 as well

2014: I think Boyhood > Birdman > GBH > Whiplash > Gone Girl > Interstellar > Guardians > Leviathan would be a pretty reasonable compromise. I'd also be in favor of moving Lego Movie up a bit

2015: If you all think Inside 2 is a lock for the top 10 (or even top 5) for the upcoming 2024 list, then I would absolutely say something like The Force Awakens needs to be higher on this list. Wouldn't mind seeing The Lobster on this list (or as a bubbler). I could see The Witch slightly higher with good lasting popularity, and influential on Eggers + Anya Taylor Joy's respective careers.

2017: I think the top ten could be shuffled around a bit, I think my preference would be: Get Out > Call Me > Dunkirk > Shape of Water > Three Billboards > Lady Bird > BR2024 > Phantom Thread. Paddington 2 would fit into the top 20 pretty easily on my list (shout out to Good Time as well). BPM + The Square could move down a bit (maybe behind Ragnarok) + Baby Driver could use a little boost up.

2018: I'd move Shoplifters down a bit as well, I've always felt like Bohemian Rhapsody had kind of generously high placement on this list (it really only has Box Office + IMDB going for it, critics trashed this movie). I'd also move down Incredibles 2 to slot #20, move up Hereditary one or two slots (as it has proven to be influential)

2019: I'd consider bumping down 1917 behind Portrait + Marriage Story

Overall 250 list:
-Would love to see Force Majeure somewhere near the bottom of the list

-As much as I hate punishing small independent/foreign/art house films: I've always felt that Shoplifters, Blue is the Warmest Colour, The Great Beauty, Toni Erdmann, Elle, and Uncle Boonmee were all given kind of generous placements (they pretty much all only do well in critical acclaim), so I would consider moving all or some of them down on the overall list.

-I could see Wolf of Wallstreet above Irishman + Interstellar above Dunkirk as a couple others have suggested (and then update on directors list eventually).

-Drive has proven to be influential, wouldn't mind that a bit higher over something like Star is Born + Argo, etc.

MP (and Dubrow) maybe you could do a color grading of the current 250 if that's cool with you. So like, green for movies which need moving up, red for movies which need moving down.

What was the nature of Amour's influence again? (I don't mean this in a sarcastic way, I genuinely forgot)

I think it was unusual for a European movie with such heavy subject matter to feature prominently at Academy awards + influence on The Father (2020).

I'll do that, dark green will mean the movie should move up a lot green will mean it should definitely move up but not by a lot, and dark red and red mean the same thing in the opposite direction, respectively.

Fair enough.

Btw, did we decide The Tree of Life was influential as well, or was it mostly just a high critical acclaim pick?

High critical acclaim pick but I wouldn't consider Amour's influence to be major either.

The Father + "Vortex" (2021)
