I'm glad of course that Outkast made it, but I think the minimal expectation for a passing grade for the voting body would have been inducting both Outkast and Mariah. And then they didn't induct JD/NO or Oasis either. Outkast may have been the Hall's biggest snub of eligible post-1955 artists before. Now maybe it's Mariah.

I'm glad that The White Stripes made it, and glad that they inducted seven. It now looks like they may be inducting 7 or 8 every year.

I don't remember the Musical Influence category from before, but I can understand Salt-N-Pepa being inducted here, being an early female hip hop artist. I don't really see Zevon as influential, he would seem to fit better under Musical Excellence.

From that list, I've gotta think Beyonce is the most likely to get in next year. Jethro Tull and The Monkees have a good chance if they're on the ballot, but since both have been left off the ballot so many times already, I'd think Beyonce is more likely to be on the ballot. Two years ago I would have thought Mariah's chances were better, but since the voters have now passed on her twice, I'm less confident about her chances next year.

Musical Influence used to be called Early Influences up to a couple years ago.

I'll have more to say when I publish my takeaway article about the inductees, but the short of it is think Salt-N-Pepa's induction in that category opens it up to include a bunch of 80s hip hop artists that the Hall has seemingly skipped over. Eric B & Rakim should be next since they haven't been able to get in through the ballot and I don't think they ever will, even though they are very worthy.

I agree that Zevon is an odd fit for the influences category and should've been inducted in the more vaguely defined Musical Excellence category.

I'm glad both of them are in now, at least.

OK, thanks Ryan. I remember that they were inducting more recent artists under what they used to call Early Influence, but forgot that they changed the name of it. It makes sense that they did change the name, since the new name is a better fit for artists like Kraftwerk and Salt-N-Pepa than the old name.
