Would anyone care to provide any argument at all? How is Phil Collins close to as influential as Genesis when his most influential music IS WITH GENESIS? Add to that his low acclaim in comparison (he is one of those artists I've seen described negatively more times than positively) and that he had a big jumping point to start his solo career in (you guessed it) GENESIS. This is like placing Ozzy ahead of Sabbath, or Lou Reed ahead of VU, or Peter Gabriel ahead of Genesis, which of course will happen.

Also disagree with the Carpenters being rock. Will look more into the list tomorrow.

Phil solo is quite influential in his own right on r&b and indie artists in the past few decades. I don't really see Lou Reed and Ozzy Osbourne as particularly comparable as his solo sound is pretty distinct from Genesis' sound.

I'd say
Influence: close, leaning towards Genesis
Acclaim: Genesis fairly easily
Popularity: Collins fairly easily

I could see Collins below Rush, though I still think he's very comparable to Chicago and Hall & Oates. Maybe they should move down as well.

I'm not sure about the Carpenters being rock myself, but I'll rank them for now.

For what it's worth, what Samp has to say about Johnny Ace on his Hall of Fame candidates page:
Sampson wrote:Pioneering rock balladeer, its first legendary tragedy (dies playing Russian Roulette backstage Christmas Night, 1954), member of the Memphis supergroup Beale Streeters with R&R HOF'ers BB King & Bobby Bland, possessor of three #1 R&B hits including the posthumous crossover smash "Pledging My Love" which helped introduce rock 'n' roll to white America in the winter of 1955. Should be a sure thing for recognition alone, as he's the biggest name in 50's lore not yet in.

I am not opposed to Genesis over Phil solo anymore but I will say Velvets and Sabbath comparison does not really work for me with Genesis' influence being much less fundamental than either's.

I think Warwick's early stuff falls under rock well enough for her to be included.

How? What did he do that was picked up by others? What artists are influenced by him? How is that comparable to a band that is the top of the tree in its subgenre? And how distinct is his solo work from post-Hackett Genesis, with whom he had already made two chart-topping, platinum selling albums?

Simon & Garfunkel also seem low in my eyes. Top tier in acclaim and popularity, their songs seem much more ingrained in popular culture than any artist inmediately ahead of them (and not just one hit: Sounds of Silence, Bridge, or Mrs. Robinson are know by everybody). Their only weaker area seems to be influence, though you could credit them with The Graduate soundtrack even.

wiki wrote:[Paul Lester of The Guardian wrote in 2013 that Collins is one of several pop acts that "used to be a joke" but are "now being hailed as gods".[299] Collins has become an important figure in US urban music,[321] influencing artists such as Kanye West,[322] Alicia Keys and Beyoncé.[323] His songs have been sampled by various hip-hop and contemporary R&B acts, and performers including Lil' Kim, Kelis, and Wu-Tang Clan co-founder Ol' Dirty Bastard covered his work on the 2001 tribute album Urban Renewal.[321]

In 2004, Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service musician Ben Gibbard described Collins as a "great vocalist".[324] Collins was championed by his contemporary, the heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne,[325] David Crosby called him "a dear friend" who helped him "enormously",[326] Queen guitarist Brian May called him "a great guy and an amazing drummer",[327] and Robert Plant paid tribute to him as "the most spirited and positive and really encouraging force" when commencing his own solo career after the break-up of Led Zeppelin.[88] Collins has been championed by modern artists in diverse genres, including indie rock groups the 1975,[299] Generationals,[328] Neon Indian, Yeasayer, St. Lucia[329] and Sleigh Bells,[330] electronica artist Lorde,[323] and soul singer Diane Birch, who said in 2014, "Collins walks a really fine line between being really cheesy and being really sophisticated. He can seem appalling, but at the same time, he has awesome production values and there's a particular richness to the sound. It's very proficient in the instrumentation and savvy about melodies."[323]/quote]
