Would anyone care to provide any argument at all? How is Phil Collins close to as influential as Genesis when his most influential music IS WITH GENESIS? Add to that his low acclaim in comparison (he is one of those artists I've seen described negatively more times than positively) and that he had a big jumping point to start his solo career in (you guessed it) GENESIS. This is like placing Ozzy ahead of Sabbath, or Lou Reed ahead of VU, or Peter Gabriel ahead of Genesis, which of course will happen.

Also disagree with the Carpenters being rock. Will look more into the list tomorrow.

Phil solo is quite influential in his own right on r&b and indie artists in the past few decades. I don't really see Lou Reed and Ozzy Osbourne as particularly comparable as his solo sound is pretty distinct from Genesis' sound.

Pioneering rock balladeer, its first legendary tragedy (dies playing Russian Roulette backstage Christmas Night, 1954), member of the Memphis supergroup Beale Streeters with R&R HOF'ers BB King & Bobby Bland, possessor of three #1 R&B hits including the posthumous crossover smash "Pledging My Love" which helped introduce rock 'n' roll to white America in the winter of 1955. Should be a sure thing for recognition alone, as he's the biggest name in 50's lore not yet in.

How? What did he do that was picked up by others? What artists are influenced by him? How is that comparable to a band that is the top of the tree in its subgenre? And how distinct is his solo work from post-Hackett Genesis, with whom he had already made two chart-topping, platinum selling albums?

Simon & Garfunkel also seem low in my eyes. Phil solo is quite influential in his own right on r&b and indie artists in the past few decades. I don't really see Lou Reed and Ozzy Osbourne as particularly comparable as his solo sound is pretty distinct from Genesis' sound.

How? What did he do that was picked up by others? What artists are influenced by him? How is that comparable to a band that is the top of the tree in its subgenre? And how distinct is his solo work from post-Hackett Genesis, with whom he had already made two chart-topping, platinum selling albums?
