Here's a starting list of 250 [EDIT: now 300] directors. I threw this together really quickly but I think it's balanced out quite well with a few important documentary and avant-garde filmmakers thrown into the mix, a few important directors for black and female cinema, a bunch of early influences, some critical favorites, some big popular names. I favored directors with a clearly recognizable style or at least some influence over those who made like two big films and that's it. I did keep Fleming though. Maybe I shouldn't have. Criteria: These directors are ranked according to how much they influenced the way in which films are directed and to the acclaim they received specifically for their directing. Also considered, albeit to a lesser degree, are the popularity, influence and acclaim of their directorial output.
Disclaimer: This list is strongly influenced by the Western canon of films. This means that in the broader scope of a global cinema certain regions may be underrepresented, among them Russia, India, China, Africa and Latin America.
